In the popular Nozawa Onsen area there are 13 individual baths called "soto-yu" (public baths). The history of hot springs go back to around the 800 AD.

You've gotta try the free onsens will you are there, there are around 13 in village so good after boarding all day and the temp is great nice and hot. Very relaxing love it

Nice baths with both inside and outside options and different temperature baths. The showering facilities are semi private with half screens between them. The cost of 500 yen was very reasonable.

The water is manageable for those who are not seasoned Onsen goers, and perfect for kids with a lovely outdoor Onsen where my girls cooled down standing in the snow and then warmed up in the atmospheric Onsen
