We went in mid June, during peak wildflower season. To say it was beautiful would be a woeful understatement. We did a day trip to rebun from wakkanai via ferry. We were quite tight on time as a result and could only hike for about...More

Rebunto is known first of all because of its alpine flowers blooming during summer months, but there's much more to this island. I visited in October, stayed for three days. Wonderful hiking trails, amazing diversity of landscapes, beautiful views, and few to none tourists.

Wild flowers abundant on the island, if you go for the many walks in spring / summer. As we don't speak Japanese and were on a budget we found this island hard to book somewhere to stay and get around. The ferry terminal information desk...More

Of the two islands reached by ferry from Wakkanai at the north-western tip of Hokkaido, Rishiri tends to get more attention because of its Mount Fuji-like cone. But for a day trip or weekend, I would say Rebun has more to offer. On Rishiri, you...More

I arrived by ferry at 10 am, there is a 10.45 am bus to the North of the island, so i hiked the section from Hamanaka to Kafukai, 4 hours 15 netto time. The trail is wide, easy and fast, it becomes slower and also...More

We spent 3 nights on Rebun Island in late July. Unfortunately the island was shrouded in fog for most of the time so we were unable to enjoy the sea views whilst hiking. Despite the poor weather we really enjoyed the island and staying in...More

We visited Rebun n September. There was no flowers left by then. The landscape is ok and we are extremely jaded travelers. The problem with Rebun was the newness and ugly architecture. When the boat gets in our first reaction was, "This is ugly". It...More

Are Rebun and Rishiri popular with tourists in the summer (eg July)? I am wondering if it is okay to hike alone there...am hoping there are at least a handful of hikers around in case something happens and there is no reception/wifi (since it's so remote)! From the photos it seems to be deserted... Many thanks in advance.
