Great way to see Mt Usu Crater
May 2019 • Couples
The Gondola takes about 6-8 minutes from the base station up to the upper station on Mt Usu. There are 2 lookouts once you’re up there. One is of Lake Toya but the other one up at the Usu Crater which is for those who can walk up some steep steps and where you can see the smoke pouring out of the crater.

Spectacular views
Dec 2018 • Family
Visited in December so was a little icy and snowy. The steps at the top that lead to the crater observatory point were therefore a little treacherous in the conditions. Despite that, the views of Lake Toya and surrounds from the cable car and Mt Usu are spectacular. Also lots of interesting geological information available. One of the highlights of our visit to Hokkaido.

Great views of Lake Toya and Showashinzan
Oct 2017 • Couples
This was a highlight of our trip to the Lake Toya area and should be only one of the things to see here. The ropeway climbs the Usuzan volcano on the west side and gives great views of the surrounding area. At the base of the ropeway there is a souvenir store that has a little museum that has the history of Usuzan, including dramatic films of the 2000 eruption that decimated so much of the town by Lake Toya. If you are staying in the Lake Toya area, you can pick up discount tickets to the ropeway as it is about 1500 yen a person otherwise. There are hiking trails at the top of the ropeway that allow you to see the main crater of Usuzan. Visited 10/16/2017.
