Certainly all of the shops on both sides of the steps up to the shrine are laden with shops - they are actually quite fun to have a look at. Or you can just enjoy the long walk up!

To get to the temple need to climb the stairs for almost one hour. The whole trip from bottom to up and back takes two hours. There are shops on the sides, so this takes time also.

The "KON-PIRA" Shrine praying for navigation safety. A long staircase approach is famous, if you are a healthy hiker you can easily climb over the mountain of KONPIRA. I enjoy looking for local Japanese souvenir shops both side of the way to the shrine. There...More

You have to climb about 1000 steps to be there but it was really worth to do it. A big temple and it was beautiful with Sakura.

We were there for the Sakura passage. Nice view while walking up & from above. We drove to the restaurant at 500th steps, had an ice-cream prior to hiking up to the top so it wasn't too demanding for us. Beautiful Japanese temples all around.

Firstly, I seem to read a lot about how tough this climb is. Yes, you'll get out of breath at some points but there are ample places to rest and catch your breath and those places have interesting things to see or nice views of...More

Among the 4 major islands of Japan, Shikoku is the most rural one, making it less famous to visitors to Japan. However, if you decide to step on this hidden gem, I would highly recommend the Kompira Shrine. Unlike other shrines in Japan, Kompira was...More

First thing is that it was a great pity we did not reserve enough time for exploring the WHOLE shrine because the thing is so large and extensive! There was one main route from Kotohira town up to this central shrine, yet many junctions where...More
