Kurokawa onsen can be accessed using the highway express bus from hakata (takes 2.5 hrs). When you arrive there is a feeling of calmness. Cute little shops to explore. You can purchase an onsen pass which allows you to visit the onsens in the town.

Although it is fairly hilly, it is easy to walk from end-to-end and from top-to-bottom because of its compactness. They have a 1300-yen onsen hopping pass which allows you to visit 3 onsens outside of your own. The pass is good for 6 months. Kurokawa...More

It's fun to walk around this small resort town and see the traditional-ish buildings and shops. If you come here, you should stay at least one night (and preferably two) at a ryokan.

A quiet and has a variety of good ryokans. We did a short walk around and look at the shops. Due to its location, the prices at the shop are slightly higher than bigger town but reasonable.

We visited Kurokawa Onsen in December. Other then the cold weather, we enjoyed walking around visiting various shops and hot springs. We found a small inn that offered onsen egg for 50 yen and free foot bath, which was great in such a cold day.

This place is a bore unless you are obsessed with spa hoping. It can be easily completed in less than an hour maybe even 30 mins. I mean how many spa can you really go in? Likely your hotel has a spa waiting for you...More
