Mauthausen is a somber place to visit. Seems a bit sterile to me like they are trying not to emphasize the atrocities that took place here. It was very inexpensive--six Euros for two adults (including English audio guide). The guide is pretty good. There is...More

This is one of those places that everyone should visit to understand what happened during the Second World War, How brutal was the Nazi regime to native citizen and soldiers and what the holocaust means. It was very tough emotionally to walk through the memorial...More

Mauthausen Concentration Camp is a must see. History must not be forgotten or we are doomed to repeat it. Mauthausen was probably the most well preserved of the concentration camps I have seen (Dachau, Bergen-Belsen and Mauthausen).

We cycled along the danube Nike Path and were appalled by the signs upon entering Mauthausen: Wilkommen, Urlaub in Mauthausen, fun and relaxation in sunny Mauthausen. As if this were an ordinary town like so many other towns. Nothing, except a few small signs outside...More

We were driving between Salzburg and Vienna and stopped here. It was very tough emotionally to walk through the memorial and contemplate the tragedy that occurred here. But the memorial is incredibly well done. Informative, somber, well maintained. We self guided with the free map...More

At a cost of 3 Euros it is well worth getting the audio guide so you will know exactly what it is that you are seeing. There is a lot to see in this infamous camp where so many people suffered and were brutally murdered...More

It is very well kept, and there is a lot of sculptures from the different countries who lost citizens in the camp.

A much larger than expected camp/memorial that will take you several hours to do it justice. It is presented in exceptionally good taste, given the subject matter. An audio guide is essential IMHO and proved very educational. The final exhibits are very sobering indeed when...More

I just rented a car from Vienna and drove there. It is not too long and it can be done in one day easily.

I strongly recommend you to rent a car or go there by bus, since you'd pay a huge amount of money for a guide while the audio guide is soooo great and costs only 3€. It gives you all kind of details that I don't think a... More
