Beautiful Church
Dec 2018 • Family
This is a lovely old parish church which is obviously well cared for by the local villagers. It has an interesting history like so many of these country churches and has a wonderfully serene ambience. The one thing that really shocked us was the War Memorial Tablet, this contained the names of no less than 29 men from the village who had lost their lives in the First World War, it must have been devastating for what was then an even smaller village than it is now, very thought provoking.
The stained glass is a very attractive feature, do not miss visiting this church if you are in the vicinity.

Easy to find and easy to park near in the village of Bretforton.
Popped into the church before heading for the Fleece Inn.
Fine architecture, fine place of peaceful worship and the local heroes from the two wars are honoured here.
Beautiful church in this beautiful village.

Lovely old church

The church was open to allow us to wander around and enjoy. We met the vicar on one visit - he was extremely pleasant and informative. Saint Leonard's is lucky to have an organist in the village, so the organ gets a regular work out.

To really appreciate both the exterior and interior of this pretty Church, I suggest you buy the Visitors Guide, written and illustrated by Geoffrey Knee, available in the Church. Outside on a south facing buttress are the Mass Dials which, when a finger or stick is inserted in the middle hole as a gnomon, the approximate hours of the Mass and Angelus can be told. The other dial is 24 radiating lines, probably an attempt as a Sun Dial.

Inside, look for the carved image of a Dragon swallowing St. Margaret; the Piscina in the South Wall; and the Welsh "tongue-pokers". But above all, take time to appreciate the magnificent Stained Glass Windows which, in some, contain medieval glass. A separate booklet is available with coloured photographs.

Visited the Church on the Way to the Fleece Inn

This is a lovely church. It was dark inside on a rainy day. It has some interesting features such as gargoyles on the inside pillars and carved panelling at the back of the church. It is definitely worth a look around.

Lovely peaceful church

The church is set in the heart of this picture-postcard Cotswold village. It is a wonderful place to visit or just sit and reflect in peace.
