Recommended by locals to visit after Carcassonne, as the other place worthy of visiting in the area...raw in reconstruction amplifies the austerity of living conditions by the Benedictine monks...microcosm of French history...Abbey overlooks the medieval village whose strolling through is a treat...small boutique stores closed...More

This is a tricky one. As others have mentioned the Abbey was very unfortunately split into two during the French Revolution and today the older (medieval) part is owned and run by the local authorities hence "public" while the other part was ultimately donated to...More

Unfortunately we couldn't visit the private part of the Abbey as it was only opening mid-afternoon on the day we visited. We went instead into the public part which is at present being restored. Whilst I am sure it will be lovely once completed, just...More

A glimpse of a very old Abbey with new and ongoing restoration work. They have recently uncovered traces of the Carolingian era church. Atmospheric, the site is tucked in a valley with a view onto the Corbieres. Part of the Abbey is now a religious...More

We were disappointed with the Abbaye de Largesse. On the plus side we visited in the afternoon when there were few tourists and it was cool. On the down side, we visited during the week when only part of the abbey was open. The gardens...More

We enjoyed this beautiful abbey that runs along the Orbieu River in the medieval town of Lagrasse. If you are concerned about entry fees skip the public paid part and just see the part that is run by the monks...much nicer. Access for tickets to...More

A peaceful setting alongside the river, this abbey is worth a visit after wandering through the old village of Lagrasse and crossing the old stone bridge.
