This attraction on a mountaintop village was easily the most contrived tourist trap I encountered in China ( and there are a few to choose from ). There is no mystery to me about the origins of the "restored" tunnels. The think tank back at the Ministry of Tourism dreamt this one up, they wrote a script, gave the locals... More

Like a lot of other Chinese places, information in a museum or cultural places are seldom explained in English and if, in a poor English. Zhangbi cun (village Zhangbi) didn't have information at all. So we took a tour guide for 60 yuan and it was definitely worth it! She explained so many things which made our stay there more... More

You could easily include Zhangbi on a daytrip to nearby attractions from nearby Pingyao ... the large city gate and the Daoist temple are a truely beautiful ensemble. The other (residential) buildings in the village - some in the local Yaodong style, some in the more temporary concrete- and-white-bathroom-tile style - are not really that interesting. It is a very... More

Zhangbi Ancient Fortress was founded about 1600 years ago. It was a military fortress that was strategically situated with difficul access and a 5-layer defense system made up of high walls, complex streets and a 1000-metre underground tunnel. The most interesting thing is that the whole structure was built following the constellations. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about the... More

This ancient fortress is built on a hill top and features old lanes and buildings, temples and a network of underground tunnels where locals could hide and sustain a siege for months. It is just being renovated and I found it to be amazing.

Zhangbi is a very small village where only a few eldery people live. It consists on a very street covered with dust and a couple of temples, an ancient tree and some interesting tunnels under the village that were built to help people escape in case of attack, but that was never used eventually. If you can share a car... More

A sensitive restoration and a good range of old buildings in a town setting, temples, and the military tunnels. Worth a stop over.

This was an interesting place but not worth a 1/2 day and a bit far from Pingyao. The tunnel existence is fascinating but there is not really much to see once you are down there. There is a neat restaurant in the complex where the residents have even relocated from the tunnel area. Super goat!

Its not a castle but a series of interconnecting tunnels. The little village of Zhangbi Cun was far more interesting & enjoyable than the tunnels. Take time to wander around this 800 year old village & its buildings. You can get an English speaking guide when you buy your ticket for an extra cost of Y40. We organized a car... More
