The directions here are not very accurate and I thought that the lake would be closer, so my friend and I tried to catch a cab from the railway station to the lake. Instead the cab driver charged us 50rmb (way way to much after I realized what he was doing) to drive us across the small town of Kashgar... More

I booked a trip with Waheed Silk Road expedition to Karakoram Highway and Taklamakan desert in June 2016. In fact i contacted all tour organisers mentioned in Trip advisor and Lonely planet and Waheed price is the most reasonable of all. Overall the experience was nice and recommended.

My thoughts on the journey to the lake: The distant snow capped mountains intertwined with the clear blue skies white clouds' seems a mirage to the eye. It is a picturesque canvas that God has painted for his creation to adore and admire. We are modern day travelers on the Karakoram Highway of the ancient Silk Road. The roads are... More

Despite a long journey, it was worthwhile to spend a few hours just admiring the natural beauty of snow mountain and clear water lake.

The road up there – not so much! There is a beautiful new highway being built from the plains around Kashgar up over the Karkorum Highway to Pakistan. Karakul Lake is at nearly the top of the pass on this highway. Unfortunately, the highway will not be finished for 2 more years. So, travelers are forced to hop on and... More

Very beautiful lake in a very dry mountain area with a snow glazed mountain (Muztagh Ata) in the background. Especially at sun set and sun rise spectacular. You have to stay long in the evening or you have to come very early in the morning. Possible from Tashkurgan as the road is OK, from Kashgar only if you start in... More

After an amazing ride up through one of the most extensive construction projects I've ever encountered- that you could drive through without a pilot car- and arriving at our ger camp after dark, we woke to an absolutely glorious morning in the high country. The valley floor sits at nearly 11,000 feet- I live in Jackson Hole and the top... More

It's a 6 hour ride to the lake from Kashgar, though that could change by next October, when the new highway is supposed to open. But wow, wow, wow, what a trip! Beautiful, stunning mountains around every bend.

Stopped off here on our way between Kashgar and Tashkurgan. Beautiful scenery with the snow clad mountains in the background. Not much to do other than take pictures. Some locals selling stones and small trinkets, possibly a camel ride or maybe even a horse ride. A couple of Yurt's and not much else. Still worth stopping as you will remember... More
