I had an awesome visit in December with Kashgar Guide. Although the weather was cold at zero degrees centigrade, just a jacket and fleece is enough.

Hello, the road has many qualities from "autobahn or highway" to road in construction, but it is not dangerous. It a´depends on the weather condition also. Driving up to Karakul ("Black Lake") is not difficult at all, but take the quick access ti higher altitude in consideration. Karakul Lake is on 3400m altitude. One has to pass at 4100m sea level. Staying over night in a yurt at Karakul is neither allowed nor recommended for foreigners for security reason & hygienic reason. The views from Karakul are exciting. The journey from Kashgar/Kashi to Tashkurgan/Taxkurgan should take 4 to 5 hours including the foto stops en route. Tashkurgan has the "Crown Inn", a modest & modest priced quiet hotel run by a very friendly Japanese couple (speaking English nicely). Do not miss a visit to the famous Stone City ! Your guide MUST obtain a police permit for the further access near to the Khunjerab pass with the highest point to go at 4550m altitude. This is the end of to (near) border trip. Reason: Afghan border is very near. The Chinese authorities care very much about foreigners safety there. If you are afraid of altitude sickness, better not go that far up. We both (75 & 71) had no problems, as we have been at over 5.000m several times very close to Mt.Everest & even slept there at 4.900m. If you plan going there, be aware that the Chinese authorities might close the pass area for security reason at any time. - You will not be allowed to ride a rented car there, nor will you be allowed carrying an international driving license, as one must pass a Chinese driving test first. You can get a friendly, good & safe & English speaking drive/guide from Uighur Tours in Kashgar at a very reasonable price, which we did past May.
