- Sonder1 contributionScenic viewsWe took the Skyrail heading up to Kuranda and train back down. The skyrail was an enjoyable experience with great views and the staff at each station were very friendly. The train ride was a bit uncomfortable given the heat and lack of aircon/ventilation but still a good experience as you get to see a different view of Barron Falls. Rating a 3 as the bus driver who took us back to the car park had a poor attitude which was unpleasant.Hi Sonder, Greetings from the ancient rainforest! We are pleased to hear Skyrail Rainforest Cableway was an enjoyable experience with great views of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area as you were gliding smoothly just metres above the canopy, before descending to discover more at Red Peak and Barron Falls. Thank you for the mention of our very friendly and professional staff throughout the ancient rainforest. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Scenic Railway are two separate business entities which guests can book together as a return experience, and offers guests two different perspectives of the ancient rainforest. We are disappointed to hear your day was impacted by the coach driver on your return. All feedback is valuable to us and we will look into this matter. Thank you for the feedback and we look forward to welcoming you back to explore the ancient rainforest with us again in the future. - ITRT38,566 contributionsOnce Longest CablewayWe boarded the Skyrail in the small village of Kuranda. The cableway runs above the Barron Gorge National Park. When the Skyrail was built in 1995, it was the world’s longest cableway at just over 4 miles long. The gondolas hold 6 people so you might find yourself sitting with people you don’t know during their peak times. One of the stops is the Red Peak Station. I recommend getting off to do the boardwalk trail loop to see what the canopy of trees looks like from the bottom. Take time to read the signage about the rainforest. Sailing over the canopy of the rainforest is an amazing trip. I recommend adding it to your “must do” list while in Cairns.Hi ITRT, Greetings from The Ancient Rainforest! We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience with us over and through the Wet Tropics World Heritage area. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway is an immersive rainforest experience, guests glide smoothly in their gondola on a 7.5km cableway with two stops to explore at the forest floor of Red Peak and Barron Falls. At Red Peak guests can join a complimentary Ranger Guided Tour to unlock the secrets of this ancient rainforest, meander a rainforest boardwalk loop to the lookout across the Barron Gorge National Park, and learn about the story through evolution in the Rainforest Discovery Zone. At Barron Falls guests can stroll another rainforest boardwalk loop leading to The Edge Lookout with panoramic views of the falls and deep gorge below or learn about the rainforests rich biodiversity in the Rainforest Interpretive Centre. Tickets are sold on a per seat basis. Each standard Skyrail gondola seats 6 people and our Diamond View upgrade, glass floor gondola seats 5 people. We will endeavour to offer guests their own gondola, however in peak travel times sharing of gondolas with other guests may be required. Thank you for recommending us as a must-do to future guests and we look forward to welcoming you back to the ancient rainforest again one day in the future. - chattam2013Canberra, Australia330 contributionsAwesome TripGoing up to kuranda on the sky rail was fantastic. Staff were extremely helpful. The only negative is the lack of air/con. Doesn’t matter if windows are open, when there is little air blowing through it gets very warm and uncomfortable. The cable cats can be modified as a matter of urgency , just for health reasons of all types of guestsHi Chattam2013, Greetings from the ancient rainforest. We thank you for the feedback and are are pleased to hear you had a fantastic experience with us, gliding smoothly just metres above the rainforest canopy before descending to explore at the forest floor of Red Peak and Barron Falls. Our gondolas have large windows which slide open enough to allow air through, plus the additional vents in the lower and upper sides of the gondolas create a natural air flow for guests to enjoy. The temperature drops in the rainforest upon arrival into Red Peak and Barron Falls where guests have the opportunity to stop and explore our rainforest boardwalks, lookouts, Rainforest Interpretive Centre, Rainforest Discovery Zone and more. We pride ourselves on showcasing this protected ancient natural environment in a sustainable manner while being an inclusive experience for all to enjoy, should guests require assistance throughout the ancient rainforest, staff are well trained and happy to help. - Russell MCampbelltown, Australia40 contributionsGood but don’t spend too long at KaruandaWe did the Skyrail up and the scenic railway back down. Firstly I would recommend doing it the other way around and taking the train up and the Skyrail down. Doing the train down you end up listening to the train’s brakes screeching most of the journey which after a while becomes really annoying. Going up would be better. The train journey itself is good - quite long and the carriages don’t have any aircon which when we went made it quite uncomfortable - but the staff handed out guides which you could use as fans. Throughout the train journey there is an audio guide which tells you what to look out for and the history of the railway being built. The Skyrail itself was fun, good clean capsules and all the staff were friendly. There are a couple of stop offs on the way up where you can spend a few minutes exploring (you don’t need long) but a good way to see the rainforest. When you get to the village of Karuanda you don’t need very long there! We ended up booking times which gave us far too long there which became boring. There are lots of overpriced gift shops and a pub (although this stopped serving at 2:30pm which isn’t great when you are booked on the 3:30pm train).Hi Russell, Greetings from the ancient rainforest. We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your experience with us over and through the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforest. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and the Scenic Railway are two separate companies which package together to offer guests two different perspectives of the ancient rainforest. We took this on the way down (train on the way up). You get the most stunning views of the forest canopy and it really give you a good perspective of the forest. Do take it (either way).

This was so good, the views were amazing, the speed of the gondola's was perfect, giving you plenty of opportunity for photos and to enjoy the views. The ride was smooth, as there was no wind and the sun was out, the only bump you would feel is when you were connecting onto the next join of the line. Most staff were fabulously friendly and it was good to see that staff were still using antibacterial spray as customers were hopping off at each stop. I would highly recommend doing this for a great day out. Be sure to get off at both stops to ensure you get the real picture of what lies beneath. Enjoy!!

Hi Missy M,
Greetings from the ancient rainforest!
We are pleased to hear you enjoyed your ancient rainforest experience with us and immersed yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area. We agree...the views are great as you relax in a gondola and glide smoothly between our rainforest mid-stations. The slight bump you mention must be the gondolas moving through our towers, there is a two second noise as they pass, as the gondolas do not move from one line to another and are fixed to the cableway.
Thank you for the mention of our fabulous and friendly staff members throughout the ancient rainforest. We continue to sanitise gondolas after guests, all touch points throughout the experience and have masks at hand should guests request them.
Thank you for recommending us as a must do to future visitors and we look forward to welcoming you back again one day in the future.

Along with a visit to the Great Barrier Reef, the Skyrail is an absolute must do
Everything from the views, to the rainforest walks, to spotting red bellied black snakes, bandicoots, and 500 year old trees were breathtaking!
Would 100% recommend visitors take the Skyrail then Kuranda Historic Railway back to Cairns.

Hi Missy M,
We do have a ticketing counter at our Smithfield and Kuranda Terminals. We recommend pre booking your experience to provide you the best opportunity to secure your preferred dates and travel times and to reduce waiting times and avoid unnecessary congestion.
We recommend allowing 90 minutes for a one-way experience, this includes time to explore at Red Peak and Barron Falls.
Regards, Rebecca
How long are you on the gondola between each of the stops?

Greetings from the ancient rainforest,
We recommend a 90 minute one-way experience to allow guests time to explore Red Peak and Barron Falls. There is no time limit for guests at these two mid-stations, it is all about taking the time to explore and enjoy your time in the rainforest.
At Red peak guests can join a complimentary Ranger Guided tour, meander the boardwalk loop, lookout across the Barron Gorge National park and learn about the Wet Tropics evolution at the Rainforest Discovery Zone.
At Barron Falls guests can enjoy panoramic views of the falls at The Edge Lookout, stroll another boardwalk loop or discover rainforest biodiversity at The Rainforest Interpretive Centre.
Kind Regards,
Rebecca

Hi Vivian, Our gondolas are enclosed however they have large windows, vents for air circulation and 360 degree views. Time spent in the gondola is 10-15 minutes at a time, broken up with two stops where you can take a break and explore the rainforest floor. The other option for an open air gondola is our Canopy Glider experience which is a premium experience escorted by a Skyrail Ranger. Information for this experience can be found on the official Skyrail website.
Kind Regards

Hi Susie, you will need to either book our coach service from Skyrail to Cairns Central (this is an additional fee and can be added to your booking by contacting our reservations team), or you can make your own way via uber or taxi.
Hope this helps!

Hi, we are staying in port Douglas for two days next month and I wondered would it possible to just do the cable car up and down and not do the railway?
Can you advise me how we do this self drive or does it have to be booked as part of a tour?
Was planning to either drive up from cairns and get there for lunchtime or to come early from port Douglas the next day. Any help gratefully recieved. Thankyou

Greetings from the ancient rainforest!
We offer a Return Skyrail Experience which consists of taking a round trip experience with departures every 15 minutes from both terminals.
Our Smithfield terminal is located 15 minutes north of Cairns and 50 minutes south of Port Douglas. We are located on the corner of Captain Cook Highway and the Cairns Western Arterial Road so it is impossible to miss us!
Bookings are highly recommended as this allows our guests to secure a departure time and minimises waiting times. You can book online or find our contact details by visiting the official Skyrail website. We hope this information has been helpful, please do not hesitate to contact us directly should you require any more assistance.
We look forward to welcoming you to the ancient rainforest soon!
Kindest Regards,
Monika Bolton.

I understand it takes 1.5hr to go up on the skyrail and that this includes the stops. How long is the time in the skyrail to each stop. I have an 11 month old and hoping it isn't too long for her.
SkyrailMarketing

Hi there
We recommend allowing for 1.5 hours for a one way Skyrail experience which includes a recommended 20 minutes at each of the two stops. The time at these stops is completely up to you as you can spend as long or as little a you like. We highly recommend taking time to explore these two stops as it completes the rainforest experience, but Skyrail gondolas do leave the platform continuously so you can continue on when you would like.
Please keep in mind how long you would like to spend at Skyrail and in Kuranda Village when choosing your ticketed time as your times cannot be changed once your ticket has been printed.
Please also note Skyrail is stroller and pram accessible with easy access boardwalks and gondolas that can accommodate most prams and strollers.
Please let us know if you have any other questions and we look forward to welcoming you!
Thanks
Sarah
