The little town of Hohenems harboured once - especially in the 18th and 19th century - one of the largest Jewish communities in the area. Their former quarter, the 'Jüdisches Viertel' is getting restored at the moment (2016), so it's not so easy to move around. In the middle of it is the villa Heimann Rosenthal, which now houses the... Easy to reach and park. The museum gives a perspective on Jewish life as a small and often oppressed minority which managed to survive and thrive for centuries. You will see exhibits on a very small and intimate scale, such as letters, photos, books, etc. Because the Jewish community was so small and isolated they had to send sons and... More

Hohenems is a beautifully situated, sleepy village that wakes up for its renowned Schubertiade, a distinguished lieder and chamber music festival. An important reason to visit it at any time of year is this outstanding Jewish Museum, an extremely well-presented history of the many rises and falls of Jewish communities in The Vorarlberg region in general and Hohenems in particular.... This was different from other Jewish Holocaust kinds of museums because it told a narrative of Jews who lived there for hundreds of years through relics and letters and audio visual accounts. The families who kept traditions, assimilated, and made a difference in the town and throughout the world. Whatever they achieved or believed did not matter for the community... More

This museum is very well done. Headphones available in several languages and staff more than happy to be of assistance. Very nice cafe with good food is located in the museum.

Small museum in a small town so expectations were not high, however the Jewish history in the area was well charted. Many of the recent (post WW2) vignettes seemed to end prematurely and the visitor was left "hanging" -- for example some contact between the former Jewish owner of a house which had been seized and its new occupier was... I came to Hohenems especially to visit this museum, and it didn't disappoint. I spent a full day and a half here, and still didn't manage to see all of the exhibits. The temporary exhibit was wonderful, and the permanent collection, which is accompanied by a wonderful audio guide (available in English), is astonishingly detailed, providing a fascinating and moving... Even if you aren't Jewish, a must-see jewel of a museum. We were lucky and went on a day when there was an outstanding guided tour. See other reviews for description etc.

I don't ordinarily go to museums, nor do I stay very long when I do but this museum captured my attention from the first exhibit. There is a self-guided tour with audio in at least 3 languages. I was compelled to listen to everything. I learned a lot about the local Jewish community right up to WWII as well as... More
