Señor Gabriel and family at the El Toledo Coffee Farm are a one-of a-kind experience. I was amazed how thoughtful and eloquent he was talking about his family, his farm, the environmental movements impact on farming in Costa Rica, what makes a good coffee, global economics, the morality of food production, consumerism, and more. I’m lucky to order a beer in Spanish and not botch it. We watched coffee roast and sampled the goods. The farm itself is a slice of Eden. Coffee is interspersed with banana, mango, papaya, star fruit, ochote, cocoa, turmeric, and much more. You will never see anything like it back home. If you are in Costa Rica, this tour should be on your short list.

The El Toledo Coffee Tour was very interesting and informative. Gabriel told about the history of coffee and how he came about being an organic farm. We sampled coffees while he explained the differences. We also sampled coffee marmalade, which was delicious! Then we walked around his coffee farm. The tour was 20.00, which is very reasonable.

It was my first coffee tour experience in Costa Rica and definitely the best. Gabriel and his family are very kind and passionated to talk about their living and how coffee can be made in a more sustainable way with less impact. My highlights were definitely the tasting and walking through the plantation. It had nothing to do with monoculture but with a very diverse garden! I can highly recommend to go there! ☀️

El Toledo

We were very impressed by the visit of the El Toledo coffee farm. This farm has its very own philosophy and is really unique in Costa Rica. Gabriel, the owner's son, told us that Costa Rica is first worldwide in the use of pesticides. Since Gabriel's grandfather became seriously ill in the early 90s due to the use of pesticides, his father decided at that time to continue the farm without the use of any chemicals. This was a big step, which initially led to a decline in the coffee bean harvest by about 65 percent. However, by diversifying the coffee with other plants, the damage to the coffee plants by insects and fungi was significantly reduced and the harvest recovered. In addition, this allowes the farm to market other fruits such as mangoes, papayas, avocados, bananas and also cedar wood, all completely organically.
Since the farm uses an almost waterless separation of the bean and the fruit husk of the coffee, the husk (cascara), which makes up 80 percent of the harvest and is lost in conventional separation methods, can also be used. From this caffeinated organic husk, the farm produces a wonderful tea, whose fruity taste is not at all similar to coffee, but is all the more stimulating because of its higher caffeine concentration. Besides this very tasty tea, the farm also produces jam and even wine from these cascara.
At the end of the tour, Ivette, Gabriel's wife, did a super nice coffee tasting with us, where we had the opportunity to try different roasts as well as the tea, the jam and the wine. Thank you so much for this very special tour, Ivette and Gabriel. We were very impressed of your passion and connection with nature. You have created a very special place here in Costa Rica!

I had a chance to take the El Toledo Coffee Tour in mid-October 2022. Gabriel and his entire team made it a very informative and worthwhile trip. The tour of his coffee production facility and farm and the information he shared on producing quality coffees, coffee wine and coffee marmalade was one of the highlights of our trip to Costa Rica. Highly recommend this tour if you have the chance to visit during a trip to the area.

If you think you know a lot about coffee - think again. The El Toledo Organic Coffee Plantation Tour is a must-do while visiting Atenas. It is about a 20 minutes drive north of Atenas and very easy to get to. It is $20/pp and probably one of the best values for the money. This was our second trip to El Toledo [April 2022-1st] Gabriel [owner's son] is a very compelling speaker [great English] and essentially mesmerized the audience with his insightful assessment of the coffee business - both organic and traditional cultivation methods. Very educational, especially for me being a non-coffee drinker. The 1-hour "lecture" ends with a coffee tasting with the pairing of sweets/salty bites that change the way coffee tastes. The lecture is followed by a 1-hour tour of the plantation, including the way coffee is processed and grown by El Toledo. Wear "dirt" shoes if visiting in the rainy season. Following the tour, do not forget to visit the "store" where you can purchase MANY coffee products produced on the plantation, including the obligatory different types of roasted coffee, but more fascinating were the other products produced from the coffee plant - such as marmalade, wine, insect repellant, hand sanitizer and few more. Plan on about 2.25 hrs for the entire tour. Treat yourself to a lunch or early dinner at El Jardin, which you will pass about 5 minutes from El Toledo. El Jardin is the best restaurant in Atenas - you will not be disappointed [See separate review].

We went as a family and absolutely loved the tour. Not a cliché mainstream tour but a much deeper, thought provoking experience and you really do learn something about coffee. Really makes you think and the grounds, surrounding and location are beautiful.

Gabriel and his team leave you with insight to the family business and a greater appreciation of the coffee process.

With an early flight arrival, the idea of a coffee tour felt fitting. The entire team at El Toledo stayed in constant communication and were helpful in guiding through the mountains and terrain. We arrived early and had a great conversation with Gabriel about culture differences, coffee, farming and etc.

The tour of the grounds was amazing looking at the diverse lush garden, fruits herbs and trees. Understanding the purpose of the farms ecosystem reflects the farms importance of diverse farming system.

During the tasting each blend of coffee is unique and tasteful in their own right. Combined with a caffeinated tasting of jams, tea and wine. We couldn't have asked for a better start to our vacation at El Toledo Coffee.

El Toledo was a gem of an experience. Gabriel was so much more than a guide: he was honest, authentic, genuine, and knowledgeable. I really appreciated learning about coffee and more during this tour and tasting. We learned about monocultures, organic farming, challenges, and biodiversity, and got to taste multiple fruits and herbs while touring the farm. As well, we got to sample and taste delicious coffee prepared by his wife, as well as tea, wine, and marmalade. Absolutely fantastic experience on a family run farm in the beautiful valley. I highly recommend it to all visitors, young and old.

We booked this tour as a side trip travelling from Jaco to San Jose and it ended up being one of the highlights of our Costa Rican vacation! Gabriel was a great host and took the time to explain their farming ideology and methods. The coffee tasting was an eye opener. And the coffee fruit marmalade is to die for. Definitely worth it!
