From the top of its 905 metres, the sacred Basque Country mountain of La Rhune provides one of the best panoramas imaginable (rated *** in the Michelin Guide). As far as the eye can see, it takes in the peaks of the Pyrenees and follows the Basque coast bordering the Atlantic Ocean from San Sebastián to Biarritz and on to the beaches of Les Landes.

We went midweek in September when the kids were back in school and it was supposedly the low season. You can book online in advance but you can't get any discounts such as disabled passengers (saves 10€). We arrived early and snagged the last place...More

Fantastic views but I don't know if we were unlucky but the trip was spoilt by having to queue for over an hour to get down. We went on a fine day so every train was full no shelter from the sun in the queue...More

I travelled by car to the little train de la Rhune, beware of the very limited car park and you may need to park a long way away… My tip is to wait for a train to arrive and watch the people walking to the...More

This is really worth doing when you are here in the area. Beautiful mountain and sea views at the top and there are a couple of cafes up there for snacks, sandwiches, etc. My recommendation is to go when it is cooler, as my wife...More

Excellent ride in old (1924) electric rack railway to Mountain top right on the border with Spain. Some cafes and shops at the top ( which is a giant communications mast). Operations have improved since earlier reviews. but 1. check weather forecast in advance 2....More

Beautiful cogwheel train and beautiful views of the landscapes between sea and mountain. You can see St Jean De Luz on one side and the Pyrenees on the other. During our climb, no luck, the fog joined the party at the top, so, nothing to...More

The view is stunning but the staff don't really give a stuff and provide no information about the next train etc. Also the information is only in French, Spanish and Basque, which rules out most of the world from understanding it...

Returning to La Rhune after 8 years I did not expect to see so many people. The ride is just awesome however be prepared to line up for about 1h30 to get back down. I would also strongly recommend buying your tickets on internet. It...More

After reading the reviews, I was concerned about parking and such. I'm happy I bought tickets the day before as the ticket line was long and we wouldn't of made it on the 10:40 train. We arrived 40 minutes early knowing that we may of...More

Unfortunately, it was chucking it down and cloudy when we went up (had been pre-booked). We did get some glimpses of coastline. I am sure on a clear sunny day then the views would be absolutely cracking. The organisation itself and the ride up was...More

Hi, Yes there should be space for your motor home. The parking area is not the biggest, so be early. Check online for tickets if you take the train. Can be very windy and cold at the top. Have a look at Google Maps for ( Le... More

A couple of hours can be spent easily. Just be mindful that if you take the last train before lunch - around 12, the next train doesn't bring you back before 230. So you are forced to stay there anyway. The return trains... More
