More mechanicals than they had ever seen before. We signed up for 3 days in March 2020 including 2 hire bikes. Day 1 was on Retamares Descent, leader Alberto was very knowledgeable and the overall group of 6 travelled on the uplift to the route near the top of Teide. The bikes were Mondraker Foxy. The routes and the scenery were stunning but as soon as the hire bikes were unloaded we could see that they were badly worn and poorly maintained, before setting off we informed Alberto that the rear wheel bearings were worn and the gears were slipping. Some fine tuning was performed but this was not what was needed, in the spirit of “get on with it” we set off on a 200 metre road ride up to the trail off the side of Mount Teide. Within the first 100 metres the rear tyre of one of our hire bikes exploded (yes really, I have never seen this before in 40 years of cycling). This forced the tyre from the rim and as we were going up hill and the speed slow a road side repair was possible. Not good for the confidence! During the next 20km of downhill the chain jumped off the rear gears and front gear 8 times, the gears jumped and the brakes faded. On one up-hill section the CHAIN RING sheared off, all four bolts lost, we all joined in trying to find the parts in the sand but the bike was deemed beyond repair. Alberto kindly loaned his bike in place of the hire bike and he completed the route with no chain ring or chain. Other mechanicals included; handle bars needed to be tightened, gear cable snapped, brake lever loose on the bars. At the end of day one we decided that bikes were not fit for purpose and with the routes being challenging the risk of injury was not acceptable. We cancelled the following 2 days, we were offered upgraded bikes or a refund, we took the refund. The communications from Darran and Adrea, the Lavatrax team was excellent but the hire bikes were not as expected.…

We took the 5 day package, it was huge fun on unforgiving terrain testing our metal to the max. We hit lava fields, navigated single tracks, jumps, step downs, rock gardens, and the odd climb (thanks Andrea!!!) If you get bored on beaches but love bikes, Andrea and Steve will show you a part of the Island that none of the sunburnt turkeys in the south will ever see !!! Great guys and guides. Have ridden with Darran in 2018, I rode this time I rode with Andrea who is also a really good rider and great fun to be with. Had a fantastic 2 days, Retamares quite technical, but the Pipeline Passage was just awesome. Andrea knows when to push it, and when to be cautious, I never felt out of my comfort zone. Hit some decent jumps and some challenging descents. Some of the scenery is incredible. Andrea is also a great laugh. Grazie Andrea!! Cant wait to do it all again next year.…
