A really lovely hotel - let down by the food
Sep 2019
Before you book you will undoubtedly be aware that this hotel is in a quite remote position and is approached by a four mile journey over a narrow, twisty lane and a car is pretty much a necessity.. This is not really a problem and of course the plus side is that the hotel is set in a quite commanding position on the top of the hill with stunning views in all directions. The hotel is well worth the journey. Being a restored medieval village it is full of character. The public areas are spacious and inviting and meals are served either inside the restaurant or out on the very pleasant terrace. Our room was spacious and characterful and was fully serviced daily by a very friendly chambermaid. Indeed we found all of the staff (with the exception of the restaurant) to be extremely friendly and helpful.. We had a delayed flight and arrived much later than planned after the restaurant had closed. However the reception staff had thoughtfully arranged for plates of cold meat and cheeses to be available for when we arrived and to be fair to the restaurant staff a couple of them stayed on to serve us. Overall for the price paid we found the hotel to be excellent value and would have no hesitation in recommending it. Indeed several people we spoke were on return visits. Having read previous equivocal reports about the food at this hotel we decided to book bed and breakfast and in retrospect were glad that we did. The buffet style breakfast was absolutely fine. Some have complained that it was repetitive - but what do you expect? We found a very wide choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurts, fruit juice, cooked meats, pastries, cooked eggs, sausage and bacon, toast etc. We had breakfast on the terrace and found it to be a pleasant experience. We ate evening meal at the hotel once in the week that we stayed there and have to say it was very disappointing. The food we had was poorly cooked, poorly presented and lukewarm. The restaurant staff did not appear happy in their work - the food was just plonked down in front of us without a word or a smile or any follow up to see whether we were enjoying our meal. Having run a 60 cover restaurant ourselves for 10 years we think we can tell when things are not right and this restaurant did not have a good feel about it. Unusually for Italy there seemed to be no passion in the food choices, preparation, cooking or service. This hotel is really missing a trick with their food offer particularly since at the bottom of the drive there is an authentic agrotourismo rustic restaurant which serves great food at half the price of the hotel and with a smile on their face! We ate there three nights and as you might imagine is was very well frequented by hotel guests. I wouldn't put you off going here - it is a really lovely hotel and I would go back. I would have given it a full five points but for the food. My advice is go - but go bed and breakfast!
An amazing stay in this beautiful place!

We stayed for 7 nights at this lovely hotel. Coming up the narrow roads and catching a glimpse of this hill top gem filled us with anticipation! From the moment we walked across the courtyard and into the Reception we were made warmly welcome. After being shown to our room and a quick tour of the hotel, within15 minutes we were shown out on to the terrace and introduced to Luigi who explained our full board status - our first lunch was fantastic. The view from here (and our room) is absolutely breathtaking - more than we could have dreamed of. Our room was lovely with the most comfortable bed! To be able to sleep with our terrace doors open with the fly screen was wonderful. The air conditioning was excellent. The food was very good with a new menu every day. We loved the food from breakfast, lunch and evening meal, no meal was a disappointment. The most exceptional feature (apart from the view) was the customer service. Everyone was warm, friendly and responsive. Nothing was too much trouble. Luigi ran a very tight ship and without exception they were all brilliant including the young woman behind the bar. A special mention from me to Catarina who came to my rescue when I was unwell - I so appreciated her kindness. We attended the cookery class which was great fun as well as the wine/ vineyard tour. We learnt so much. Thank you to everyone for such a great holiday in an area with so much to explore. Fantastic! We will return!

Charming Old Quaint
Sep 2018 • Friends
This Hotel/Castle is reached via a very long lane, coming from the Perugia direction that is, it is worth the journey,
Our room was spacious, with doors leading on to our private portion of the terrace. It was well appointed, although the mattress was rather firm and needed a topper. There are no tea/coffee making facilities in the rooms, but can be obtained at the bar, (charged for).
The restaurant is good with views across the countryside there are two swimming pools, unheated. The staff are friendly and efficient, overall a pleasant stay.

2 night Silver anniversary stay - Aug 18
Aug 2018
We stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate our 25th. I had upgraded to a superior room which was great with stunning views across Canalicchio and Collazone. The room was very large and comfortable and had a Jacuzzi bath. Staff were very helpful and provided us with milk and a kettle for hot drinks in the room. The restaurante was top class for breakfast and dinner with a terrace area with great views of the Sunset. There are 2 swimming pools - one small near the restaurant and a larger one 150m away from the village near the apartment complex. One complaint - there is a 20e pp per hour charge to use the sauna / steam / hot tub facilities which I would expect to be complimentary at a hotel of this type and cost. It is quite tricky to find initially well away from the main road and several km along a winding, very rough single lane. Lovely hotel and would recommend thoroughly. T

Wine Massages and Spa time
Sep 2017 • Couples
We stayed in Umbria and the traveling and touring was fun but tiring..so we were very ready for some spa time! We booked the Wine Massages--of course! The masseuse gave these special one hour massages on the heated aqua table. They were very relaxing! Afterwards we enjoyed a glass of wine in the sun on the pool deck with gorgeous views of the Umbrian countryside.

The next day we returned to the spa for a private one hour retreat. We were able to have the full spa privately for the four of us. We used the Turkish bath, Jacuzzi, Sauna and the relaxation room with herbal teas and spring water.

This experience provided us with the perfect retreat with pampering and relaxation. We were refreshed and ready to enjoy our cooking class we had booked for that afternoon.

The spa includes a Turkish bath (steam room), jacuzzi, shower, and sauna. You can also get one of a variety of massages. Totally worth it and very relaxing.

Wedding Party
Sep 2017 • Friends
Where do we start! From the word go the staff and management at Relais il Canalicchio were wonderful. We had a party of 44 staying three nights for our wedding weekend and everyone had a wonderful time. Nobody could fault a single thing - apart from when we drank them dry of Prosecco!! Thank you all. The rooms are great, the food is delicious, the views are stunning and the staff are incredible. We are ALL coming back again next year!

Minimalistic but present
Jun 2017 • Friends
The spa is minimalistic (but it is there, so you won't hear me complain); you have a hot tub, a hammam and a sauna. You also have a relaxing room, but the door couldn't close, so you still have the noise of people talking on the aisle. Everybody in the relais was full of praise about the massage. It is worth trying it!

Great food and beautiful location
Jun 2017 • Couples
Stayed here last week for 7 nights half-board. The food was delicious with 3 courses each night and plenty of choice on the menu. They also had a great selection of wines at reasonable prices. Service overall was pretty good and we were made to feel very welcome. The hotel is a beautiful building and the surrounding views were amazing. Perfect for anyone looking for a base to explore the nearby towns by car as the hotel is in a remote (but very scenic) area. Possibly not if you want to spend most days in the hotel as there are a limited number of sunbeds by the pool and the spa is pretty small. Only suggestions for improvement would be to modernise the bathrooms in the rooms and install better air con, but everything was clean and in working order. We went for the room upgrade and had a big terrace which was nice. We did the free wine tasting tour at the nearby vineyard which was great. Overall a good choice!

Massage for one
Jun 2017 • Couples
Treated myself to a bit of indulgence on arrival. Big choice of massages and started with a pleasant herbal fruit tea whilst changing into the smallest pants in the world. I was covered with a towel and had to be woken to turn over. Great value and very therapeutic.
