We had a rough start due to a misunderstanding of the start time for our tour, but it quickly became a good tour due to an excellent guide. The Cano Negro boat tour was highly recommended and I had read that tours can fill up if you wait to long, so I booked mine early. My pick up time was listed as 7:30 am. I am an early riser and as my family was getting dressed at 6:40 am I walked towards the office for my first cup of coffee. I was meet on the path by the manager telling me that my tour bus was her for pick up!!! Yikes two of us were not fully dressed and no one had had breakfast, let alone coffee. I showed the guide our confirmation for a 7:30 pick up and she agreed to go pick up another group and come back in 15 min. We were dressed and ready at that time, but missing the great breakfast at our hotel made us pretty grumpy.

The bus was comfortable and the guide set a pit stop half way that had coffee and egg sandwiches to go, which helped. On the road again and getting close to Cano Negro, when the bus comes to a sudden stop, the guide gets out and rescues a two toed sloth trying to cross the road. We all get a close up view of a sloth as it climbs the roadside tree.

Once on the boat the guide points out animals every few minutes. Howler monkeys, Capuchin monkeys, Iguanas, Jesus Christ lizards, balisk lizards, iguanas, Caiman, Anhingas, Egrets, snakes and more. This was an excellent way to see animal life.

The Cano Negro boat ride was comfortable, friendly and informative experience.

My girlfriend and I had a fantastic time on the boat tour in Cano Negro. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative about the land and wildlife. Our guide also did a fantastic job in pointing out wildlife such as, birds, Caymans, Iguanas, and Monkeys. They provided us with binoculars to help see the wildlife, and also used a laser pointer to help spot the camouflaged animals. Would definitely recommend!

This is a ‘must do’. We went on a private tour and it was well worth the money. Our guide Daniella was a mind of fascinating information. We saw howler monkeys in the trees, white faced monkeys up really close, sloths and lots of birds. We were the only boat so it was really calm and peaceful.

We did a boat based wildlife tour and were able to find lots of wildlife to photograph. We used a guide who was invaluable in spotting wildlife long before I could see it.

We had an amazing boat tour of Cano Negro by Canóa Aventura. The guide was very informative and using his telescope was able to take videos on our cell phones of many of the bird and animals we saw. The driver was very helpful to my 90-year old mother and would help with binoculars so hat she could see the wildlife also. The boat driver was amazing at spotting animals and birds. We saw 3 types of monkeys, caiman, iguana, and so many birds I can’t list them all. The lunch was very good. We really enjoyed the coffee, chocolate and sugar cane demonstration. This is a must see in Costa Rica.

Great river experience seeing monkeys, caimans, and many interesting birds. The guides were all incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and passionate about the area and the wildlife. Learned a lot. The lunch following the river safari was really amazing, and to cap it off we got a bonus tasting of chocolate and coffee at a neighboring farm. Thanks to Jorge and the entire team!

We took the 6 AM boat tour which we were told would allow us to see the greatest variety of birds. It was well worth it. The tour guide met us in the lobby of the Natural Lodge and walked with us (about a 5 minute walk) to the boat. The boat sat about 8-10 people and had a covered roof which kept the sun off of us. The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna. Good binoculars are highly recommended for this tour. This is a must do if you are in Cano Negro.

Our family of 5 (kids age 6, 12 & 14) did a fantastic boat tour in Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge.
We drove up from Arenal to visit the Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge. It was a full day (long drive from Arenal), but it was absolutely worth it!

My husband had been corresponding with Tati and she let us know exactly where to meet Renato. He met us at the small parking area and we walked together to the boat. He asked us a few questions about what we were interested in seeing and off we went.

The boat was very comfortable (covered), and we slowly went through the waterway pausing when we saw interesting animals. Renato was very knowledgeable, as was the boat driver, who spotted lots of wildlife.

The wetlands were incredible - we saw caimans, iguanas, basilisk lizards, all sort of birds. The highlight of trip was finally seeing a sloth (after almost 3 weeks in Costa Rica without seeing one in the wild). We would not have been able to see one on our own - Renato and the guide knew exactly where to loo.k.

At the end of the boat ride, Renato took us up to the lookout tower, an 18m tower with incredible views of the area. He told us about the conservation history of the wetland, and more about the water cycle and geography of the area. He was incredibly knowledgeable, and I believe he is very active in conservation of this special ecosystem, working with the locals.

We were hungry after the tour, and Renato recommenced a fantastic restaurant for us, and even suggested which items we should try. Thank you Renato!

Our guide was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. As he pointed out monkeys, iguanas, caymans and other wildlife, he also gave us a lot of information about them. The only downside was an uncomfortable, lengthy bus ride.

An amazing place with wonderful wildlife, definitely worth visiting if you love wildlife and birds in particular. We did a private boat tour - our guide, Rosi, and the driver were so good at spotting things for us. We saw a fantastic number of birds, as well as caimans, monkeys, iguanas, basilisks and turtles.
