A very interesting visit to a winery that has made the history of Alta Langa. Riccardo, our Guide, was an excellent cicero: competence, passion and natural ability to tell the wine and the context in which the winery is inserted. Wine that is confirmed as a product of excellence of the Langhe. A nice discovery the white Vermouth!

The cellar is very nice, definitely worth visiting. A disappointment the tasting: three wines plus a magnum probably opened the day before because it was completely bubble-free, with the prospect of a further taste, instead... a vermuth and the contract, an aperitif, like crodino, although more good. For 50 euros I would say it could have been done better.

A beautiful company, full of history and charm. A special mention to the girl who followed us during the visit and tasting (I don't remember her name unfortunately) who, with professionalism and passion, introduced us to a wonderful reality. And of course thanks to Mauro for showing us his extraordinary work that he has been doing with love since he was a boy.
Highly recommended winery!!!

Stunning wineries, our guide was very knowledgeable, very friendly and kind. The tasting was delicious, accompanied by excellent local products. We had a great time, it is truly an excellence of our territory. The purchase of bottles was a must because they are of such high quality.
We tasted not only wine but also an exquisite Vermouth.
Cost of the visit €50 per person
Cost of bottles to take home: 200

We highly recommend a visit to the UNESCO heritage winery. Manual techniques are still used in the various manufacturing and production processes from which the great passion and love for wine can be seen. Excellent experience. Mo❤️Do

Curious to visit the cellar of which we know some products (classic method for the most part), we were not disappointed at all. The guide was good and engaging, the cellars were beautiful and evocative. The final tasting was satisfying and we tried two bottles ("for england") that we had never tasted, but which turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Once in Canelli, I absolutely recommend visiting the cellar.

Very entertaining tour enjoyed at Contratto Winery by the charming and enthusiastic Simone. Taste, review and of course order delicious Sparkling Wines! Also had a delicious cocktail with Vermouth from Contratto: Aqua di Neive... worth a try!

We had a fabulous tour and wine tasting here on my birthday. My husband organized it in advance, I always recommend to do this for all wineries. Our group at 2 PM happened to be small- it was only us and another couple. But the Italian group was much bigger. Elena, our guide, was nice and informative. She showed us the impressive cellars, told us the history of the winery and explained the method of making their sparkling wine. I liked the fact that they are still turning bottles and doing the rest of the work manually. I fell in love with label designs on the bottles, beautiful work of an Italian artist influenced by French art deco style. During the tasting we tried the exquisite bubbles. There were supposed to be three kinds of spumante but Elena also brought a sweet moscato that we appreciated a lot. The snacks were minimal but all splendid! I really loved grissini (said to be made for Contratto by a two Michelin star restaurant) and salty hazelnuts! Yum! Cheese and cooked salami were also delicious! At the end we purchased a bottle for ourselves. I can’t wait to open it! Wish we bought all!!!

The ancient town of Canelli, about half an hour’s drive south of Asti city, is the historical centre of the Asti Spumante industry and the major manufacturing centre for winemaking equipment in Italy. The old castle perches on top of a hill in the centre of town, and most of the old Spumante houses have built their Cantinas (wineries) along the bottom of the hill with extensive cellars carved directly into the limestone rock under the hill. This network of tunnels, kilometres long, have become showcase museums for many of the wineries, shrines to the wine making art known as the “underground cathedrals of wine”.
One of the better known ones is the Contratto Cantina and museum. The Contratto family started business here in the 1870’s and in fact are not just a producer of Asti Spumante, most of their output is methode classico (Champagne type) style of wines, as well as Piedmont’s famous big 3 reds – Barolo, Barberesco and Barbera d’Asti. We visited the cellars on Sunday, which is open day, other days of the week require an appointment, and were impressed at how the old cantina, which although still very much a working winery, has been turned into a showcase of old wine making equipment and wonderfully laid out. Entering through the big covered courtyard we went into the first level of cellars where thousands of bottles stand in their pupitres, or triangular wooden stands, undergoing the process of gathering the sediment into the neck of the bottle before degorgement in which the sediment is frozen and the pressure expels it from the bottle. The cellars maintain a constant 12-14 degrees C temperature, ideal for the process and aging of bottled wine. Descending to the next level, we walked through hundreds of metres of limestone-encrusted tunnels used for storage of wine in barrels and bottles until we reached the underground tasting room, lit by candles, where we tasted the reserve Brut 1997 a delicious blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Nero grapes as well as on of the classic Asti Spumante, made from Moscato grapes. The whole tour lasts about an hour and is in our opinion well worth it, not to mention that the area has several famous restaurants to take in before or after.

The best in the area. This cellar is totally stunning. The tours are a wonderful experience - the right mix of some information without being boring. The ambiance was delightful.
The wonderful sparkling wines are not well known in the US so it was fantastic to become acquainted with them.

Hi,
We are going to be in Canelli on September 22nd, 2018. We would like to tour the Cantina and museum. What time of day to these occur? What is the cost? should it be booked in advance?

Hello ~ We will be touring Canelli area in late September and would like to take a tour of Cantina Contratto. I went to their site, but cannot read Italian. I was wondering if the tours run throughout the day, or if you have to prearrange a tour and if so, how does one do this.
Many thanks for any help.

We were lucky enough to have the BnB owner where we were staying ring and organise it for us. You would definitely need to contact them before turning up for a tour. It was a great tour, very worthwhile!
