Clun Castle: A Glimpse into Medieval Grandeur
Nestled in the charming town of Clun, Shropshire, stands the evocative ruins of Clun Castle. This medieval fortress, once a symbol of Norman strength, offers visitors a chance to step back in time and explore England’s rich history.
You can expect to wander through the remnants of what was once a grand structure. The castle’s ruins, set against the backdrop of the beautiful Shropshire countryside, are particularly striking. While much of the castle has succumbed to time, the site still retains a certain grandeur, with its towering keep offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.

A very striking feature that looks a bit like the famous Corfe Castle and it does have a car park with a bit of a muddy walk to see the ruins. Several information boards. I walked back through the town to avoid the slippy and flooded track from the car park via the bridge.

I drove back from Welshpool and saw these ruins over the top of some house in the charismatic village of Clun.
It is a typical ruined castle, not much left sadly and I'm not going to pretend but the heavy rain made it only a quick visit.... My phone struggled to take a picture it was that wet!
It is not far from the centre but car parking was a tad difficult.

Parking here is difficult. Parked on the narrow main road along with cars already parked there. You need to park as tight to the wall/hedge as possible after letting any passengers out first. There is a car and a half width left for two way traffic. Clearly, gives driving through an issue.
A nice short up uphill walk to the remains rewards you with a scenic views all around. There is not much left of the castle and the tower section is fenced off for safety. Nice area for a picnic with great views.

Plenty of parking near by and easy to find. Beware though it is quite a hike up ( and then down ) some uneven paths and sturdy shoes are recommended. The view from the top is worth the climb just a shame it is all barricaded off now so you can't get into the actually ruins .

So that was the only place on my 2020 summer Shropshire holiday, which I could not visit properly. I parked in (in a tiny car park, where people drive around to wait someone to leave) and walked through a little bridge to a field. Then I started to walk to the castle on a path, but found that I am not young and fit for that hill path, so I knew couldn't do that. I then waked into the town on the tiny slope streets and found that the castle real entrance is from the town. because it was uphill and too many uphill streets, (no parking availability) I just turned back to the car park and left, It wasn't worth that so many energy to put in seeing another ruin. So I warn now everyone, that the entrance is from the town, but parking is somewhere down. I am sure it a nice place, especially for younger or fitter people, I just did not have enough patience and energy to find a right way.

We started our tour around with a visit to Clun Castle and were not disappointed. The castle can be approached from the car park near the bridge in the village, or from the Bishop’s Castle road. This is an easier route for those less able. The castle is a ruin and was, even before the Civil War. For all that, it is well worth the visit. The views out are lovely and it has enough to fire the imagination. Lovely little Crown Bowls lawn nearby was interesting. This monument is free to look around and also to take the dog. Plenty of walks radiate out. Refreshments in Clun and a pleasant sit by the river with a tub of ice cream.

After a pleasant stroll around the delightful old village of Clun we walked up to the ruined castle. A bit of a scramble took us up to the area of the keep from which there are wonderful views. A few helpful picture boards explain the history of this atmospheric place.

Not very well built. Most of it has fallen down which makes me question the saying "they don't build them like they used to"
It was difficult to get to also. For some reason they built a big hill before they built the castle and then plonked the castle on top, making it a struggle to get up there. Must have been a nightmare to carry their shopping up.
The benches all face away from the castle and now I have a crick in my neck from straining to look at it.
To top it all off, there was no roof and no sign of a king or queen anywhere (other than my mate Chris). Distinct lack of a gift shop really spoiled the experience.

I came here when visiting my mate from Uni. My mate and I struggled to find a place to park, so walked up to Clun Castle from the village. There are good views from the motte of the surrounding countryside. There are some information boards which tell you about the history of Clun castle.
Unfortunately there is not much here as only about 1/4 of the keep remains (which is poor condition). The property is not very accessible for those with mobility issues and you need to be careful where you walk as there is lots of dog poo.
