I visited Jinci temple with a group and we spent several hours there which I recommend because the grounds are huge and beautiful and there are so many interesting very old structures to see and when you look inside there are many treasures to admire. It is absolutely worth the trip out of Taiyuan, only 24km and accessible by bus, or you could do what we did which was to hire a car which we then dropped off at the airport in the evening. I found the Buddhist garden to be the most peaceful & tranquil garden, although all of them were very nice indeed. The complex also features a leaning tree which is apparently thousands of years old.

Jin Ci temple is located about 40 minute drive out of Taiyuan city. If you are staying in or around Taiyuan, this is well worth a visit. It is about 25 km from Taiyuan. It is located in a large park and has gardens, a lake, and many pavilions, some as old as 1500 years old. There is a mixture of Daoist, Confucian, and Buddhist influences in the buildings.
