Overview
More
Black Chasm was named a National Natural Landmark in 1976 by the National Park Service for its outstanding displays of rare helictite formations. The 50-minute guided walking tour descends a series of stairs and walkways that loop around the formation covered caverns walls. Here, flowstones interspersed with stalactites, draperies and helictites compete for space above the stairways. Above ground activities: gemstone mining, nature hike, picnic tables. School program available. Open every day, year round.

The very friendly staff helped us to enjoy our visit. While we waited for the tour we wandered the grounds and the kids "panned" for gems and minerals. (You had to buy the bag but they had fun and each found several gems). The tour...More

A nice place to be on a hot summer day. The cave stays at a constant 58 degrees year round. Cool formations to see. Guides are very knowlegeable, lots of stairs and some fairly narrow places to walk through. Not too friendly for people with...More

Nice welcome from Mike. Tour guide Heather was excellent. One of the few places in the world having halactites, which are sideways- growing stalactites! Several beautiful rooms. We had a great tour round this lovely cavern. We don't mind heights so had an excellent time.

My husband and I visited here on an adult-education bus tour from nearby Rocklin. Despite spending more time on the bus going and returning than we did actually at the Cavern, we were still REALLY glad we went. The cavern is a one-of-a-kind place, with...More

The Black Chasm Caves and Caverns is probably one of the most unique trips and tours that I've ever done in my lifetime, and I've done a lot. This trip does require some foot/leg work, as it's a unique entrance into the cavern (You will...More

Anyone exploring the Volcano area should include some time to visit Black Chasm. How often do you get a chance to follow a knowledgeable person through a small door hole and find yourself in beautiful caves? Easily paired with lunch at the General Store or...More

Yes, a light jacket is called for and sneakers are a must. Steps can be damp from cave moisture and it is a 'climb' up and down. (although your guide offers ample stops while describing cave wonders)
