Over the past 40 years, the Charente-Maritime local council has contributed to improved public awareness of the exceptional natural heritage of the area. 2000 hectares of land were acquired and landmarked as Sensitive Natural Areas, protected, enhanced and open to visitors. As part of these territories, a network of Nature Centres offers optimum conditions for our visitors to improve their awareness of nature and the environment.

Between the edge of the forst and the village of Dampierre-sur-Boutonne, the 'Asinerie du Baudet du Poitou' (Poitou Donkey Nature Centre) is a typical farm of the Saintonge area, featuring Poitou donkeys, draught horses and mules. The Asinerie is an authentic conservation centre of the Poitou donkey and mule breeds. Discover their story from a fun and pedagogical viewpoint.

Many activites for all ages are possible : guided or non guided tours, and by reservation : carriage rides, hikes with the donkeys, and much more!

Have wanted to visit this place for ages and was not disappointed. The donkeys have lots of space and are well looked after. Lots of picnic benches if you choose to do this, there is nowhere to buy food and drink at the farm. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the girl at reception explained all in very good... More

This is not a donkey sanctuary! This farm looks after a rare and very interesting donkey breed. They also have heavy horses and muels. The tour is good with physical interaction with the young donkeys. Very enjoyable!

I was dreading going to see these donkeys. Thought it was going to be a smelly, hot farm! How wrong was I?? We absolutely loved this visit. The guide was very knowledgable and made the tour great fun! The highlight of the visit was obviously the baby donkeys, they were so friendly and cute. The history and science part of... More

I wish there had been more to do. I imagine in summer they will have far more activities organized but on the first day of the season it was ‘merely’ the donkeys to look at. Set in a lovely rural location there is a very pleasant walk around the farm that takes you past all the enclosures taking in the... More

We were recommend this by others staying in the local village. So we thought we'd give it a go. This a donkey sanctuary with a huge difference. They are succeeding in saving the local Baudet donkey. They are quite a size for a donkey and also have long hair, verging on dreadlocks There is a walk around the farm with... More

Found this venue via trip advisor. A worthwhile visit for all ages, we were greeted by the cashier in fluent French, but soon turned to fluent English. The site is well laid out with a route to follow, A translation sheet in English also helps to describe and explain the tour, hence a well laid out route. Bookings can be... More

My wife and I visited the donkey farm in September 2015 driving from Paris to the southwest. The donkeys are excellent and well taken care of. This is a very special place that raises a very special type of donkey called the Poitou donkey (look them up). We tremendously enjoyed our visit walking around the farm. Mostly in French, but...
