PENGHU TIANHOU TEMPLE, MAGONG, TAIWAN
Sep 2019
There are many TIANHOU Temples in TAIWAN; as it is an island most locals based their living on sea, as fishmen. The TIANHOU (LITERAL Meaning : Heaven Goddess) was supposed to protect the seafarers on their fiching and other sea trips!!! Similiar TIANHOU temples are found in Main Land China along the East Coast (EXAMPLE: XIAMEN. Teochew....) However, this Tianhou temple is Not outstanding as compared to other TianHou Temples in TAIWAN (examp[le: KAOHSIUNG. TAIPEI...) likely the populations are small and funds are limited. hOWEVER IT IS WELL MAINTAINED visit it if time permits, just for the experience.

Incense-ly traditional

Constructed over 300 years ago during the Ming Dynasty, the Tianhou Temple is the oldest Matzu temple in all of Taiwan. The simplistic facade radiates traditional Chinese architecture. It's the focal point of old downtown in Magong & you can take a stroll through the oldest alley on the island which is directly beside the temple.

A temple with 300 years history
Apr 2018
It is a quite well-preserved historical temple. Stone floor, wooden beams, windows, everything has story if you have some local guide to tell. It is the first Mazu temple in Taiwan and Penghu does great protection of temple history.

Typical traditional temple worshipping Mazu, the sea goddess of Southern China

Here is the iconic historic heritage of Penghu island. The temple was built hundreds of years ago, and followed the same architectural style of Mazu temple scattered along the west coast of Taiwan. However, the size is smaller. There are other heritages aside, like Shi's house, 4-hole well, etc. You can reserve 30 minutes for visiting all these, including taking photos.

Tianhou
Jan 2017 • Friends
In a country absolutely full of beautiful temples, Tianhou in Penghu can definitely hang its head high. I've read this is the oldest surviving worshiping temple in Taiwan (travel in Taiwan website). Originally built in 1592, of course going through many renovations, the temple contains several Qing era artwork and a tablet proclaiming the success of a local resident in convincing the Dutch to leave. The main feature is the wooden Matsu statue (again claims to be Taiwan's oldest) and weighs 150 k.g. All in all, its a lovely place to come and spend an hour and have a look around.

Must see attraction when in Penghu
Aug 2015 • Couples
Penghu is a bit sleepy at times. There isn't much to do if you like bug cities. But there are a number of good historical sites to visit including this temple which has stood on these grounds for over 400 years. It's an easy walk within Makung and we'll worth the visit.

This is a very beautiful temple indeed and full of history as one would expect on this island. Nice to sit down in the shadow just outside and watch people as well.

The temple have stood here for 400 years. It's full of history and ancient arc hitectural technology. The top of temple has a symbol which is half Dragon and half horse. This unique symbol represent a blessing of peace.

Established in Before 1604- Our Oldest Temple
Feb 2015 • Friends
Old local people call here as "Má-keng" Temple, this "Má-keng" maybe is the oldest religious architecture in Taiwan history and still extant.

When we visit to any temple in Taiwan, we shall enter in Dragon Side[Our right side] and exist from Tiger Side. Here, you will see an unique picture of Tiger side, probably you will feel a little funny, actually it looks like monkey! The reason why you look like monkeys, people in 400 years ago they never saw a real tiger, so they just drew it by their own imaged~ That became the result!

You also can find a big stone tablet inside, which recorded that a Ming Dynasty General (Shen,You-Rong) expelled Dutch East India Company(VOC) fleet (Commander: Wybrand van Warwijck) from Penghu area in 1604. This event resulted in VOC started to open ground in Taiwan, and played an important role in the early history of Taiwan accidentally.

But something is pretty unfortunately, you cannot see the original appearance after the rebuilding in 2013.
