About
garden, a church, a land of memory Perched at a height of 600 m in the middle of a vast natural bowl which has been known as the « vallee de l’Absinthe » (wormwood valley) since high antiquity, the abbey watches over a land which has been sacred since Prehistoric times. On this sandstone spur, the Cistercian abbey of Valsaintes, inhabited by monks from XIIth century to the French Revolution, has an unusual garden as its neighbour (which was certified by the French Ministry of Culture in July 2011). The old dry-stone terraces host a rich spontaneous vegetation to which we have added a collection of 500 varieties of roses, bulbs, hardy perennials, annuals, plants suited to the dry soil, trees, shrubs and vegetables. Vegetable, mineral and wild life all live in harmony with Man and 100% natural gardening. When you come to see the garden, you can also visit the completely restored XVIIth century abbey church. Artefacts, such as the archaic solar calendar, show the passage of all those who have marked this historic place. A timeless stroll…in a garden like no other!

True it is the end of August and gardens in Provence tend to show a certain wear and tear by now....but this garden was unkempt, untended and parched beyond belief. Not worth visiting. Perhaps when the roses are in bloom it would be better, but I think it's in need of a more experienced gardener
and certainly a bit of help on the watering side......

Hello,
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review.
Our garden is very dry at the end of August as everywhere in Provence. We water very little for the sake of saving and managing water. The garden is maintained by 2 gardeners, and certain areas of the garden are voluntarily left without maintenance to promote biodiversity. All this is explained during our guided tours and in the video presented at the entrance to the garden. video with English subtitles.

We had a special visit for our small group at the gardens with the Jean-Yves, the gardener. His English was very good and he had lots of intriguing information for us that we would have never grasped on our own. There are a lot of cultural and plant anecdotes to be discovered. The roses were no longer in bloom the beginning of July but there was still lots to explore and admire (hard work and devotion). The cherry on top was a private Gregorian chant concert for us in the chapel at the end of the garden tour. Then we enjoyed a picnic supplied by one of the vendors that works with the gardens. This experience was unique, relaxing and informative.

This is a lovely hike from Gite de Chaloux to a garden of roses of every type and color. One will also experience the ambiance of ancient times ambling through the Abby and boulinettes in the garden. There is a gift shop with delightful floral essences and soaps amoung many other gift choices.

This place has been a place of cult already before christian times dedicated to mother Earth. In medieval times a cloister has been built here. The cloister has been abandonned and recently renovated from ruins by a group of enthusiasts. They established also a garden wth many special kinds of roses and other flowers. They have their own accommodation now and a seminar hall. It´s a place suitable for seminars. It has a special charm. For flower fans is best to visit in May and June.

Superb collection of roses, growing in various groupings in a naturalistic way forms a delightful garden. There are lots of interpretation boards with details of the flowers. The Jardin Sec was fascinating and I took photographs of many of the plants which were thriving without any need for irrigation or TLC. It was heartening to see some which I had thought were weeds being encouraged to grow. We managed to walk right past the entrance to the gardens after parking in the designated space. A walk down the hill takes you a nursery where many of the plants from the garden are on sale. Well worth a visit which costs about 7 euros. There is a drinks vending machine in the office at the entrance which also sells gifts. Very clean loo near the renovated church in the garden

A trip to Abbaey de Valsaintes goes through the lovely hillsides of Provence and in the Colorado Provencal. The drive in itself is a great experience. The destination is a place of peace and beauty, an old monastery which today concentrates much in gardening and especially roses. The garden on the hill slopes of the monastery is wonderful with the various kind of flowers especially when the roses are blooming. The monastery also has its' own breeds of roses which can be bought on the place. You can also obtain very professional guidance on the choice and growing roses.
Moreover, there are really often various kinds of seminars and other events. It is really good to check the program on their internet site.

Nice guided garden visit, which one can then continue at one's leisure. Gregorian chants in the abbey in the late afternoon, made our visit just perfect, as the abbey has excellent accoustics. Bought double ticket to visit the Simiane la Rotonde castle, which had a very interesting exhibit about Countess Marie D'Agoult.

Very nice grounds with magnificent roses. They also can help you if you have problems with your plants, they have herbal remedies, not chemical ones. I tried their essential oils for my roses this year and no bugs!

Souhaitant visiter ce jardin début juillet, n'est-ce pas trop tard pour la floraison des rosiers ?
Combien de temps faut-il compter pour la visite ?
Que peut-on découvrir à proximité de l'Abbaye de Valsaintes ?
