About
Visitors to the Castle of Simiane la Rotonde are taken back a thousand years into the history of a monument built on the site of a former Roman oppidum. Unique place in Provence, the great ceremonial chamber of the "Rotonde" with its magnificient ribbed cupola opening into an occulus with a sculpted wreath of flowers. The capitals of the pillars separating 12 arches round the wall are decorated with expressive stone masks from a symbolic medieval bestiary. Exhibitions of paintings, drawings or sculpture are regularly renewed each season. Every summer, in August, an early music festival is held in this beautiful room which once welcomed troubadours. The Sainte Victoire aromatherapy laboratory is situated in the South wing of the Castle. It offers an introduction to the benefits of aromatic essential oils. The Castle is now the property of the commune and has been listed as an Historic Monument since 2000.

Required visiting in Simiane-le-Rotonde. Spectacular Medieval architecture
atop a charming village overlooking the lavender fields of the Plains of Albion
below.
Could use a bit of a face-lift with respect to explanations and some English
would be nice.....but all in all not to be missed.

We visited the castle as part of the French history festival-they open up important monuments in September to celebrate their patriotism-it was free to enter and had a good buzz as there were a lot of other visitors. We spent about an hour wandering around The amazing monument and castle and then explored Simiane-la-Rotonde-so pretty! Although definitely not friendly for those with mobility concerns! Amazing views!

Beautiful medieval village on the hill with small alleys and a great number of picturesque views. The citadel is crowning the hill. Advantage for lazy tourists - you can easily get by a car to the very top.

What a gem. Nothing much on the outside but inside was superb. Very nice helpful desk clerk and good value at 4.5 euros. We spent about two hours here on a rainy day and we love Simiaine village too. A hidden gem.

This castle is now partially restored, although not all areas are accessible to the public. Displays help you understand the history.

We were hugely impressed with the historical architectural heritage of the region, and visiting the Rotonde was another delight among many. From outside you don't really know what to expect, but once you go inside the wow factor made you forgot about the camera for a while. As a bonus the village is right among lavender fields.

Beautiful building, sensitively reconstructed to make it safe to use. Has a small concert space perfect for 13century music. Also a shop selling perfumed oils and an artist's studio. Fabulous views.
Walking up and down through the cobbled village streets is pretty but only for the fit and able but there is a route for cars around and parking at the top.

The lavender fields of Provence have to be experienced if you are ever in this region during the summer. The aroma of lavender fills the air and this spot is a perfect place to relax and refresh. This is a beautiful old town with winding medieval streets.
