About
Mammoth Cave self-guided tours allow visitors to explore by themselves, while listening to an informative 'audio tour' available in English, French, German, Malay, or Mandarin. This is the easiest of the caves to tour, with the first chamber accessible by wheelchair. Entering the cave through native bushland along a gently sloping boardwalk, visitors can explore the natural time capsule at their own pace. The cave once contained over 10,000 fossils, many of which were the remains of long-extinct giant animals known as Australian Megafauna. Visitors can even view a 50,000-year-old 'zygomaturus' jawbone embedded in the cave wall. After exploring the cave, visitors can take an optional bushwalk back to the guide's station and enjoy the magnificent marri and karri forest surrounding the cave.

My husband and I enjoyed our visit to Mammoth Cave. It was a great experience and we were glad we checked it out. Not too strenuous and a beautiful bush walk return. We did find it a little pricey ($45 for two adults), it was beautiful inside though and we would recommend going.

My husband, 15 year old daughter and I enjoyed the Megafauna Nightstalk hosted by a guide. The tour started at 6pm while still light outside and finished at 7.30pm in darkness outside. It was super interesting and great to go at out in the evening, although we couldn't decide whether to eat dinner before or after. We decided before, which was probably a good thing as most places in Margaret River close reasonably early for service.
We had one main guide and a secondary guide at the rear of the group - both were very knowledgeable and super-friendly. We walked down many steps and then into the cave, which is as it's called, 'mammoth' with many different caverns inside. Torches are not really needed while inside the cave as there are lots of floor lights showing the way. The group was big (25), meaning that at times we had to split into to smaller groups and wait but that was fine as it meant you could really get to enjoy the ambience and see different shapes in the many formations. After about 45 - 50 minutes in the cave, we then climbed the 170 stairs to leave the cave. Some level of fitness is required to get up the stairs. We exited in the darkness and then walked the 800m back to the entrance across the highway (well managed by the guide) and through the bush. The path is quite rocky with occasional steps so useful to have a torch here though the light on your phone should suffice if you are not interested in looking up into the trees.
We really enjoyed our nightstalk and would definitely recommend as a bit of a different way to see the caves.

If you have time to visit all the caves it is worth buying the "package deal" at your first cave visit. Mammoth Cave has a huge amount of steps so if you have bad knees I dont recommend the visit. Having said that it is still quite beautiful to view from the top! The cave is magnificent.

Dear Redjessie,
Sincere thanks for taking the time to provide some feedback on your visit to Mammoth Cave. We're very glad you found it magnificent. With regards to the physical demands of the tour, we find that most visitors with limited physical abilities safely navigate the timber deck boardwalks and stairs with hand rails quite well. Whenever a visitor expresses any concern about doing stairs, we usually recommend they walk as far as the daylight at the back of the cave, and then turn around and come back through the cave the way they went in. This allows our guests to avoid about half of the total number of stairs, but still see all of the stunning sections of the cave.
Thanks again for your review, and all the best for your future travels.

One of the 4 major caves in the Margaret River region. Self-guided unlike the Jewel Cave and Lake Cave. The front portion of the cave is definitely prettier than the latter half, and warrants more time. When exiting the cave, you will have to cross the road to get back to the visitor center. If you're in good health, suggest choosing the longer path (700m) over the shorter one (200m) to enjoy a nice bush walk that features a lot of nice flora that is unique to the region, including tall marri trees. The long path also features a gentle creek crossing (with rocks laid out) during the winter season. Definitely worth a visit!

This cave is well worth a visit. Very specky and cool inside. When you have finished exploring you make a choice as to whether to return back the way you came or exit up a very steep narrow staircase to the road and then a longish walk back to the car park. We are both in our 60s and fairly fit so we enjoyed it BUT I note some reviewers might not have realised that this climb and long walk back through the local forest is an option you can choose. If you dont like steep stairs or its hot or happens to be raining we would suggest retracing your steps rather than taking this route OR be prepared to take your time, and take water with you.

Ive been to this cave four times. Each time I go, it never disappoints. The size in itself is truly amazing. There are many steps in this cave, especially when making your way out the cave. Take your time and enjoy the view! The lighting inside has been done beautifully and gives you the ability to really gasp at the depth and size of the cave. Very interesting when hearing the audio device to hear what fossils were found etc.
Well worth a visit!

The main draw was the fossil remains of animals that are now extinct, but there aren't that many on display. Lots of steps especially back up to ground level at the exit, but it leads you down a short 400 or 700m bush area before you return to the visitor's center. The cave itself took only about 25 minutes to cover, and the rest of the stair-climb/ hike back to the exit took another 15. The audio guide that comes with your ticket is not very informative (not that many stops/ tracks to listen to), my player's socket had contact issues so half the time the volume was very low/ crackling with random bursts of loud volume that uncomfortably jab your eardrums. IMHO, Jewel Cave is a much better experience, with a fully guided tour that takes about 1h, much more is explained, making for a better learning experience.

As someone with a partner with a disability, we selected the Mammoth cave as it says it provides wheelchair access. Which it does... it allows access to the very start of the cave which is amazing.. but... it would be nice if the price was reduced to recognise the minimal access that is available.
Paying full price seems unfair.

Hi there TrueBloo,
Thanks for taking the time to share some valuable feedback on your visit to Mammoth Cave, and please accept our sincerest apologies for charging your partner full price.
We most certainly do offer a discounted ticket (currently $11.50 instead of $22.50) for people with wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and walking frames, so that they can view and enjoy the first cavern of Mammoth Cave. We encourage them to spend plenty of time in the first cavern taking in the beauty and peaceful tranquillity of the space, while also listening to all of the audio tracks on the mp3 player. It is the biggest and most heavily-decorated cavern in the whole cave, and visitors usually enjoy it immensely.
I really can't imagine what has happened on this occasion. It would be great if you could get in touch with us on 9780 5958 so that we can process a partial refund for you.
Once again, thanks for getting in touch, and we look forward to hearing from you soon.

Another wonderful cave experience mixed with bush walking and sightseeing. The entrance is easier and wider compared to Jewel cave. Once you get inside, you will be amazed how big the cave is inside. I think this cave has the most number of stalactites and stalagmites among the other caves. Steep and long stairs walked outside combined with either the 200m or 700m bush walk after. Suggest to take the 700m so you get to see wildflowers and a nice river crossing. Got lucky, we went there after days of rain, we get to see lake flowing inside the cave - what an awesome view.

Lovely cave and well set out track inside. The self guided tour is informative without being boring. Fossils can be seen inside the cave. Enjoyed equally by young and old.

The prices seem a tad expensive for just one hour tour. May I check if there are any promotions to get a cheaper rate?
Written 25 March 2018
I am not sure what price you refer to. My wife and I did the self guided tour using the MP3 equipment supplied by the cave. It was excellent — especially as my wife had a Mandarin version of the tour. We paid between $20 to $22.50 each. I had my seniors concession. We found it good value and most interesting. The climb out is the only challenging aspect. Highly recommended. Best on a weekday.

i would like to take my mum to see a cave. She can not walk too far. is mamouth cave ok to walk just to the first section that is wheelchair accessible? will she see much from there.
Written 9 August 2017
My mum and uncle are both 83 and they managed it without a problem. My uncle has hip problems and still was fine. If you take it easy and go slow then it shouldn't be a problem. At the end there are quite a few steps and then through the bush so only go into the first part then come back that way.

Ngilgi and Jewel are the easiest and as Ngilgi is only partially guided you can just go at your own pace. definitely don't go to the lake cave as that is the smallest cave but the stair walk at the end is a big one... however that is at your own leisure too. maybe an hour long each.... Mammoth was relatively easy too. Just be sure to go at your own pace... again all self guided so need to book and you can stop a s rest along the way. phone up the Margaret river tourist bureau for elderly travellers to the cave. hope you get to enjoy their splendour.

Do we need to prebooking online or we can purchase from there on time of visit?
Thanks...
Written 3 February 2017
No need to pre book. Look in all the booklets and see whether you can get a discount. You can also get a combined ticket with the other caves which works out cheaper if you want to visit more than one site.

Where can I get information on the cost of the caves? I haven't been able to find anything anything.
Written 18 September 2016
Single entry into Mammoth Cave is $22.50. With that you get an audio tour device to listen to while you are there looking.
Enjoy!

Hi. This seems like a really interesting place and I am eager to pay a visit. However, would it be advisable to bring my 3 yr old along?
Written 31 October 2015
Hi
It would be safe for your 3 year old and she might like the whole idea of the cave. She would not be interested in the detail of the recorded tapes on the headphones. There is
no problem with access - bit of a steep climb out but it is steps. You can take the short walk back rather than the longer one through the forest as this might be a bit boring for her. You can make it as long or short a visit as you want because its not guided. I would give it a go.

Hi, my mum can't climb stairs due to her weak legs. Will it still be fun for her to go to Mammoth Cave if we can't go through the entire trail? How much time should be allocate for this?
Written 15 September 2015
Hello CuteFrogg,
Yes it would be a great cave for your mother to visit, she can get probably two thirds of the way through, there are a lot of stairs to exit so she would be best to turn around and exit the way she came in. You would need to spend at least 30 minutes in the cave , possibly more. I hope you enjoy the experience .

We are bringing a visitor ( young man) from Brazil and wonder which cave to choose if we can only find time for one. He has been into many caves in Brazil. Also wondering about pricing.
Thanking you in anticipation
