At the centre of Scotland’s only Pictish Monastic National Monument, the Museum at Tarbat unravels some of the mysteries of the Picts, explaining through its award winning archaeology programme fascinating details about these enigmatic people and their way of life on this intensely historic peninsula. ‘A’ Listed Tarbat Old Parish Church, home to the Discovery Centre, is in itself an historic timeline of six churches that have stood on this site with the remains of part of the crypt dating from as early as the 8th century. On display, beautiful sculpture and craft-working objects, architectural features, local exhibitions, photo archives and detailed interpretation provide the contents of our Museum – ‘a real gem of history well worth the visit.'

During a recent stay in the beautiful village of Portmahomack we walked to the old church building on the hill overlooking the stunning Dornoch Firth and were amazed at the discovery of the ancient Pictish Settlement which had been painstakingly excavated over a number of years. The museum is a treasure-trove of artefacts and information and is a very interesting... More

This is an excellent little museum jam-packed with items of interest - with fascinating insights into history of the Picts. Lots of interesting exhibits, a small shop, a self-service coffee area, and items of local history. The staff/volunteers are helpful and friendly. An off-street car park is available. The admission price is great value.

What a great museum, it really has something for everyone. The staff are extremely friendly & helpful. Once you get up the path, the centre is accessible for people with mobility problems. All floors can be accessed by lifts. Definitely worth a visit.

What a little gem this is! An old church building packed with information and relics. The lady on hand was very pleasant and helpful and showed us round the various rooms. The displays were excellent and we agreed it was a great visit. We'll certainly be taking any visitors we get along here.

This museum gave a fascinating insight to the history of the Tarbet Ness peninsula and the interaction between the Picts and the Norsemen as well as information on the more recent history of the area. The displays were great and the staff very helpful. A great way to spend an hour or two.

While on holiday in Dornoch last week we went for a drive and found what we first thought was a quaint old church. We decided to stop and were so happy we did. What a fascinating place. My parents and my husband spent a lovely time here, so much to read and look at, it may be quite small but... More

Very warm welcome. Small but full of interesting information. Some care needed with access to all areas of the building.

Recommended by the holiday brochure, we decided to take the drive down to this lovely fishing village, we had read good reviews on tripadvisor and went to see for ourselves. This did not disappoint!! Well maintained and free car park, plenty of signs outside and inside the centre detailing the history of the Picts and the church. Adults cost £3.50,... More

There is a wealth of interesting objects in the museum (particularly the Pictish items) but we wished that the display was less random. You seem to switch rapidly between centuries and themes. Another irritating thing is to have two video presentations on loops running at the same time so wherever you are in the building you have two different voices... More
