There is a bit of a climb to reach this pagoda. It was made after Chiang Kaishek visited the lake and found this place to be very beautiful. He had this pagoda raised in honor of his mother. Very fitting tribute.

Pagodas are quite common in China, but rare in Taiwan, This outstanding pagoda provides a marvellous view over Sun Moon Lake. It's quite a climb to get to the top, but it's worth it. By the way, the pagoda was built by the last President Chiang Kai-shek in honour of his mother.

This offers the best view of Sun Moon Lake in our opinion. Period. Nothing comes close. We did the long climb all the way from the pier before realizing the round island bus goes there too. (The hike is nice actually.. good exercise and scenery - in winter). The pagoda is clean, well maintained and nice. The view at the top offers a panoramic 360 view of SML. Well worth it.

This is less of a temple or place of worship but a tower with views surrounding it and a nice little climb. If you have plenty of time to kill and want to avoid the crowd, this place is good for a stroll and little climb.

Not hard to get to the top of the tower. Magnificent view of Sun Moon Lake from the top of the tower. I was told that when I look down from the tower, I would see part of the lake looked like the sun, and the other part looked like the moon. This was how the lake was named. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the resemblance!

An interesting pagoda around Sun Moon Lake. Got by the round -the-lake shuttle bus and then went about 900 metres on foot. Nice views. If you go from the nearest pier (by ferry), you have to walk a steep hill up for about 1 hour.

From street level you climb 700 meters initially on pavement then up a concrete pathway, then stairs and finally you reach the base of the pagoda. Beautiful views of lake and valley but if you want the best views and bragging rites you need to climb the additional 50 metres of stairs within the pagoda. Once on the upper tier you'll agree it was worth the effort.

This was one of our highlights of Sun Moon Lake. There is a small car park (holds about 20 cars and no large vehicles allowed) from which a path meanders uphill through a small wooded area. Whilst there are a largish number of steps to undertake, there are sections that are on the flat and a shady pagoda area about half way up (if you need a breather) anyone with average fitness will be fine.
We have to say that the pagoda is very impressive and, although we've visited Japan, this is the first one that we've found to be open. Signs say that the area is open from 9.00 until 16.30. However, the pagoda was open when we arrived at 8.30.
The views from the top of the pagoda are superb, even on a cloudy day. We'd definitely recommend on the basis of our experience.

This one is a bit of a hike. It takes a while to get up there, but once you get to the top you pretty much have the palace to yourself and it is stunning. Amazing views from the top.
