We stopped at Xuan Zang Temple after entering Sun Moon Lake. Xuan Zang Temple is peaceful and beautiful. The views of Sun Moon Lake were beautiful. It was foggy at the lake in mid March.

Xuanzang Temple was built in 1958. The relics of a famous Tang Dynasty Buddhist monk, Xuanzang (Hsuan-tsang) are enshrined here, along with a golden idol in is image.

Hsuantsang was a prominent Buddhist monk who made a 17-year journey to India during the 7th century.

The Hsuantsang Hall is the main hall of the temple with 3 floors. The second floor contains the Hsuantang’s shrine and the third floor had the relics of Hsuan-tsang and his classic works.

Other interesting features of the complex include Hauantsang Memorial Museum, Turtle statue, white elephant statue, and bell tower

On the roof of the building, I saw another view of the beautiful Sun Moon Lake.

It was very interesting to learn about the BUDDHIST SOJOURNER ... at Xuanzang Temple.

Note: The water closet is to the left of the temple near the snack bar.

The temple is nice with some relics. The temple has a great view of Sun Moon Lake. If you have the time, it is okay to visit but not a must see attraction.

This beautiful temple pays tribute to a monk who wandered from China to India via the Silk Road. Not content with that he travelled around India before returning home. The temple has magnificent decorations as well as welcoming and helpful monks. Toilet facilities and a gift shop are available plus there is a coffee shop and beautiful verandah area on which to sit.

The exterior is much more interesting than the inside with a number of statues and map depicting travels. The top two rooms are for those who want a basic understanding of Buddhism.

For me the outside of the temple was the best part. It's quite photogenic with statutes and outbuildings. The temple itself inside was quite uninspiring, especially the upper two floors. But then I'm not religious and I'm sure those who are, and bekieve the relics tk be real it's more meaningful. However, I had to berate two individuals for taking photos when clearly on floors 2 and 3 they were not permitted. Unless you can respect their religion don't come to temples.

This temple is not gorgeous but is of cultural and historical importance. Some of the relics of the actual monk who was the protagonist for Journey to the West are enshrined here. The relics are in a case on the 3rd floor viewable by closed circuit TV. No shoes and no photos allowed on the upper 2 floors. Free literature in the foyer. Adjacent museum details the life and travels of the Master (we did not go inside). Great views across the lake to WenWu and Shuishe.

As you make your way around the southern end of Sun Moon Lake, it's worth a quick 15 minute stop to visit the Master Xuan Zang Memorial Hall. There are some interesting statues in the courtyard right after you pass through the gate and there's also a unique and interesting white statue of the Master on the roof of an adjacent building to the left of the main hall.
