Sun Moon Late
Jun 2020
I went to Sun Moon Lake three times. Anytime I was there, I admired the different colors of the lake. In spring, the lake surface reflects the pink color of the cherry blossoms. In the autumn, the lake showed itself under the yellow and red color of the forest changing leaves. Thus, no matter what season of the year you come to Sun Moon Lake, you will not be bored. Because each time, the lake gives you a different beauty to admire. Moreover, the cycling path around the lake is one of the most beautiful cycling routes I have ever seen.

Fun day out for the family!
Jul 2020
So much to do here at Sun Moon Lake. Always visit here a few times when returning to Nantou to visit the in-laws as less than an hrs drive away. Hiring bikes is always a fun choice as well as the boat tours and visiting some of the temples. I recommend avoiding the parking touts trying to signal you in, also some of the vendors can sometimes be a bit pushy but never too bad. As always in Taiwan, plenty of different foods to choose from!

First Trip
Dec 2020 • Family
This was our first family trip to Sun Moon Lake, and it was quite fun. We took the boats across the lake to the various stops. There were hiking trails, temples, food, and of course, great views. We got lucky because the weather was very nice when we went. Due to the pandemic, there also weren't too many people visiting the lake. If you have the time, there are plenty of beautiful places to visit around the lake that may not be popular tourist spots but worth a visit. The gondola ride was also worth a visit.

MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE
Dec 2019 • Friends
After reaching to the vista outlook, I gazed upon the lake and saw the setting sun reflecting itself on the still smooth waters of Sun Moon Lake.

This is indeed a very scenic area of Taiwan. After the long day of sightseeing it was so relaxing to sit, to mediate on the beauty, to watch a bird flying, and to fill my soul with satisfying joy.

Lalu Island in the middle of the lake separates the lake into a part shaped like a crescent moon and another part shaped like a round sun; I can see how Sun Moon Lake was named.

The lake and its surrounding countryside have been designated one of thirteen national scenic area in Taiwan.

From the various other locations around the lake ... Wen Wu Temple, Cien Pagoda,
Jianjing Temple, Stuentzang Temple, Syuanguang Temple, and Xiangshan Visitor Center each one offers a different perspective of the beautiful lake.

Many of my friends said I need to visit Sun Moon Lake to make my trip complete when I go to Taiwan, they were right. It is the MOST BEAUTIFUL LAKE ... at Sun Moon Lake.

A boat trip on the lake is a great choice in Sun Moon Lake.
Feb 2020
Sun Moon Lake is bounded by Lalu Island. The east side of the lake is shaped like the "sun" and the west side of the lake is shaped like the "moon" which is the origin of the name. The environment is very comfortable. The lake tour with the scenery of mountains and rivers is relaxing and intoxicating. You need at least a full day to enjoy the sights and activities there. I went to Sun Moon Lake on the Spring Festival ,so it’s very crowded. However, since I chose to go to a place with few people, I was not affected. Overall, Sun Moon Lake is a paradise in my mind.

Cool scenic lake on a highland
Nov 2019
This is one of the most popular places to visit in Taiwan. We took the Nantou Sun Moon Lake bus from Gancheng Bus Station in Taichung early in the morning. Just buy the bus tickets on board. There was a half price promotion when we visited that day. We used our Easy Card prepaid cards which were very handy when using public transport, just tap on and tap off. The bus also passes by the TRS Railway station and the HSR Railway station in Taichung where you can also board if there are vacant seats. We went on a weekday, so there were ample seats. Sun Moon Lake is quite beautiful and you need at least a full day to enjoy the sights and activities there. Even then, it was quite hectic. An overnight trip would have been more relaxing. We took unlimited boat rides to the various places around the lake. Weather was sunny. We also hired bikes to cycle to the Xiangshan Visitor Centre from Shuishe. Sun Moon Lake is a nice place to walk, cycle or take boat rides to enjoy the scenery, cool weather and sights. Going back to Taichung was also by Nantou bus from the Shuishe Visitor Centre. We bought our boat and bike hire tickets online, which were way cheaper.

Sun Moon Lake is very beautiful and serene and has many attractions to offer.
Jan 2020
Sun Moon Lake was a delightful aspect of our 6 night Wendy Wu “Fascinating Taiwan” private tour, as part of our 18 day Asian trip to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in January 2020.

On day two of our tour we travelled from Taroko Gorge on Highway 8 – the Central Cross Island Highway on a most exhilarating drive up and down the mountain range via the Hehuan Wuling Summit and finally to our destination at the Sun Moon Lake. Our hotel overnight stay was the Richforest Hotel in Yuchi Township (reviewed separately), offering great views of the Lake from our suite balcony.

Sun Moon Lake, so named because it is said that the east side resembles the sun and the west side the moon, is very beautiful and serene and has many attractions to offer. It is the largest body of water in Taiwan (surface area approximately 7.93 square kilometres and depth of 27 metres). The tiny Lalu Island is located in the middle of the Lake. This is a sacred ground for the Thao tribe, one of aboriginal tribes of Taiwan.

One of the “must do” attractions we experienced was a scenic boat cruise of the Lake from the Yidashao Wharf (Ita Thao Pier) to the Xuanguang Wharf. Ita Thao Pier is a busy tourist area with lots of interesting shops, eating houses and many tourists and very close to our hotel. One novel aspect of the pier which caught my eye on the way to our cruise boat was one of the pier’s railings decorated with a parade of colourful ornamental green frog figurines in various poses with happy faces adorned with pleasing Christmas decorations ( since we were there in early January). At the base of this railing were several pot plants with colourful red flowers, evenly spaced out. We thought the effort taken to make the pier attractive to visitors was very commendable.

Our cruise boat was small but comfortable and painted an attractive dark pink and white. We enjoyed a very pleasant cruise soaking up the beauty of the Lake and admiring the surrounding mountains and serene landscape until we reached the Xuanguang Wharf. From this wharf we alighted and climbed some steps to the very impressive Xuanguang Temple or Holy Monk Shrine (reviewed separately). A nice pastime just before reaching the temple was to witness locals feeding a scurry of squirrels residing in a nearby bush area. Near the Temple’s front entrance is a large open space which becomes a fantastic vantage point for viewing wonderful vistas of the Sun Moon Lake and Lalu Island with Shuishe Wharf and Shuishe Dam in the distance. From this vantage point we could better appreciate the beauty of this picturesque lake.

While admiring tiny Lalu Island, we learnt about its recent history. The island was formerly known as Guanghua Island. In 1978 the Nantou County Government built a Matchmaker Pavilion on the island where annual group weddings took place. However in 1999 the horrific Jiji 921 earthquake destroyed the pavilion and sank most of the island. After the earthquake the government, out of respect for the Thao aboriginals, recognised the island as sacred ground, had it renamed “Lalu” in the Thao language and only members of the Thao tribe now go there. Also in October 2000 jiadong trees, regarded as the dwelling place of the Thao's highest-ranking ancestral spirit, were planted on the island. It’s an interesting island in that floating docks and fields surround the island in the shape of the Eight Diagrams (a set of ancient Chinese symbols with mystical meanings) forming a water moat between the island and the floating docks and fields.

After our boat cruise we concluded our touring of Sun Moon Lake with an enjoyable visit to the ornately built Wen Wu Temple (also reviewed separately) on the northern banks of the Lake, before heading to our next destination at Tainan.

On days two and three of our Taiwan 'round the island' tour we experienced an amazing trilogy of outstanding attractions beginning with the breathtaking Taroko Gorge, followed by an exhilarating mountain drive on Highway 8 to reach the Hehuan Wuling Summit with its stunning 360 degree mountain views and then culminating with the picturesque beauty of the Sun Moon Lake. Touring surely doesn’t get better than this.

Must visit the Sun Moon Lake
Oct 2019
The lake has beautiful views and has is tranquil. The surroundings are lush and green and a balm to the eyes. Also, no trip of the lake is complete unless you do a cycling trip around the lake. The cycling route around the Sun Moon Lake is said to be one of the “10 Breathtaking Cycling Routes” in the world (CNN News) and we just have to do it. Go visit the Ci En Pagoda, visit the Ita Thao Pier and do the boat ride of the lake and visit the Wen Wu temple.

Beautiful nature in Nantou
Dec 2019
Recommended by tour driver and spend around 45 minutes ride from Taichung. Large and beautiful lake I ever seen before. Visitors can have a cycling ride around the lake or boat ride at the lake. Visitors can also visit Ita Thao Village near the Sun Moon Lake. The villagers are friendly and the food there also delicious.
