Magnificent cruise through the canal - very pretty countryside. Particularly enjoyable lunch on deck as we sailed through.

It's always a very nice experience to sit and watch al the boats passing through the Sluice in Brunsbüttel. Not something you see every day.

This is a small, but important canal, linking the North Sea with the Baltic Sea. There have been a number of canals since the first one in 1784 and the number of ships using the canal is the highest for any in the world.

We went through the locks on our cruise ship, which was throughly fascinating. I stayed out on the balcony the entire time (took about 1.5 hours total) just to watch, not only the mechanics of the operation but to wave at the people on the...More

1st time negotiating the Kiel Canal on a Fred Olsen cruise ship. Amazing technology watching ships of all sizes queue up (when busy) to enter through the huge canal gate and begin a journey of almost 70 miles seeing some stunning scenery.

Sitting on the banks of this magnificent canal, and also viewing the mighty locks, was a sight not to be missed; vessels stacked high with containers from many Eastern Countries of the World (Latvia; Estonia; Norway; Germany) was a sight to behold. And all so...More

This is a great area for a spring walk or bike ride. There is a path along the canal that makes for a great flat ride. Interesting to see all the ships transiting the canal.
