Hidden Gem in Laois

Absolutely beautiful Italian gardens in Heywood, Ballinakill. Very poorly marketed and unknown to many tourists. Well worth a visit. Ideal for wedding photo's.

A garden with a difference, the school grounds are within Haywood gardens which are lovingly maintained. The addition of information boards gives you an apetitie for the history of the original site, there is no charge, however limited access to some of the gardens for wheelchairs. There are several photo opportunities. I have not done the extended walk but am... More

We took a trip here at the end of October and were not disappointed - the beautiful gardens designed by Lutyens are glorious - they overlook a man made lake surrounded by deciduous trees - in Autumn they were especially magnificent. The gardens are free to enter and were once the private gardens of the now demolished Heywood House. I... More

Beautiful gardens to visit. Easy enough to walk around the grounds, although maybe not with a buggy etc. Parking available inside the gate to the right. There were toilets there... but locked!

Came across this by accident and had a pleasant surprise. Gardens are very well kept and there was a lovely walk along by the river, we didn't have enough time to do the whole walk but we intend to go back soon. Well done to the gardeners/caretakers. The school beside the gardens must make for very happy students!

A lovely walk, beautiful gardens and oodles of charm. Hidden gem in Co. Laois. the circular walled garden is beautifully manicured and the woodland walk a great treat for walkers.

It has so many differ things to see. The Lake, graveyard, country walk, formal gardens. You could spend at least 2 or three hours walking around the different walk ways. It's really beautiful.

Very much worth a visit. Really magical 20th Century, Lutyens designed gardens. Wonderful display of flowers. Situated in the grounds of Heywood Community School. Not well signposted once you are in the grounds, but persevere.

Drive past the school parking is at the back. Easy entrance to the gardens. Won't be great on a rainy day if you not prepared. Although the house is no longer there you can imagine what it used to look like. It's well worth a visit.

I went with my wife and 8 year old daughter. Parking is just behind Heywood Community School. Walking in from the car-park you are surprised by a beautifully kept garden ranging back to the 1800's. In the middle of a stone-wall ring you will find a pond surrounded by flower beds and stone sculptures. The views from here are stunning,... More
