Neighbourhood: Ginza / Tokyo Nihonbashi
Ginza is famous for being a trendy hotspot, but it's also a downtown area with shops that were founded over a hundred years ago. Department stores and luxury boutiques line the route from Nihonbashi to Ginza. It's a long established tradition to shop and stroll while the road is closed to traffic. Luxury hotels, world class cuisine from talented chefs, and a collection of glitzy clubs will make this area popular with anyone looking for a night out.

Cuteness is undeniably one of Japan's most amazing exports. The industry is worth billions and turns profits of hundreds of millions per year. The fact that they dedicated an entire "street" to promoting them at Tokyo's Main Station says a lot.

Can't fight the cuteness so here we are, indulging in the sheer volume of products they have, half-joking that we should bring more home to sell because everything here could sell for at least double the price back home.

Older school people would like:
Hello Kitty, Doraemon, Shin-Chan, Snoopy, Miffy, Rilakkuma, Pokemon, Ghibli, even LINE, some local TV station characters and manga too!

Newer characters would include:
Gudetama, Moomin, Sumikko Gurashi (those cute and shy creatures all over Uniqlo's kids' shirts).

Collectors shouldn't miss:
Lego, TOMICA flagship + PLARAIL.....

Don't miss it, look for the sign "for Yaesu" and it's towards Daimaru.

Located in the basement of Tokyo Station near the Yaesu side, it turned out to be the perfect stop to do some Christmas shopping. Here you can find cute gifts and items from:

Pokemon
Rilakkuma
Hello Kitty
Lego
Moomin
Studio Ghibli

What was surprising was the Tokyo Station character store had the longest line to shop. Not sure why.

Best time to shop was at opening as the closer to the lunch hour the crazier the crowds became.

Tokyo Character Street is a very popular shopping location hidden inside the Tokyo Station. It is filled with gift shops featuring famous cartoon characters, including Hello Kitty, Snoopy, Crayon Shin-Chan, Pikachu, Rilakkuma, Totoro, Piske, etc. These shops are full of great souvenirs and gifts. It is truly a heaven of cuteness! For non-residents to apply for tax refund, please remember to get a “Tax-Free Reception Slip” at the Tax-Free Counter before making any purchase.

It was a little difficult to find at first, but once I found it, it was worth the long walk to look for. It was a little crowded in some stores, but the variety of goodies more than makes up for the crowds.

Don't make a special trip unless this sounds like heaven to you or you have small children, but Character Street is unique and worth a visit.

Tokyo Station is huge; there are signs but you may walk a bit to find it. You'll find the expected (Pokeman...with a tremendous line for a pop-up kiosk one night we were there, Hello Kitty) and, at least from my point of view, the unexpected (Kapibara, a - wait for it - capybara!).

If you bring small children, bring money. You will have to get them at least 1 thing. Many, MANY stuffed (plush) animals, stickers, cups, dishes, t-shirts, chopsticks, etc. Some are seriously overpriced, in my opinion, but most are adorable...kawaii (cute).

Tokyo station has dozens of restaurants, so stay for lunch or dinner.

The street was difficult to find, as it was in between two stations (pretty far apart). It was filled with many popular Japanese cartoon/anime characters and their related merchandise. However, they are also available all over Japan, hence it was nothing really attractive to me.

I was there because I heard they had a gashapon street as well, which could be interesting. I was disappointed that both the tokyo character street and gashapon street were both quite small/short.

I would not visit here again in my next Tokyo trip.

For those visiting Tokyo Japan soon, you may want to consider Akihabara instead, there are so much more there.

I had sensory overload with the shops, you'd be hard pressed NOT to find something! It was very crowded, wear comfortable shoes and be patient.

Many toy/souverir stores grouped together at basement level of the Tokyo Station. The stron point is the variety of shops. Some are dedicated to one 'character' (e.g. Charlie Brown), others are more general.

Great place to visit if you want to get a quick glance of available merchandise for many of Japanese Anime characters. It’s simply a street of gift shops. I wished they carry more items geared towards foreigners.

We were roaming around the little 'avenues' of Tokyo Station looking for Ramen street to grab a bite and happened upon Character Street. I've heard about it before but didn't think I would enjoy it much (not a huge fan of these) but I found it surprisingly enjoyable. I ended up picking up quite a few bits and bobs to take back for friends. It's not exactly a cheap shopping area but it's definitely different and very Japanese. I'd say if you're in the area and have time to spare, look up Character street.
