The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ginza / Tokyo Nihonbashi
Ginza is famous for being a trendy hotspot, but it's also a downtown area with shops that were founded over a hundred years ago. Department stores and luxury boutiques line the route from Nihonbashi to Ginza. It's a long established tradition to shop and stroll while the road is closed to traffic. Luxury hotels, world class cuisine from talented chefs, and a collection of glitzy clubs will make this area popular with anyone looking for a night out.

This branch of the Mitsukoshi Dept. Store in the Ginza is conveniently located at exit 7 from the subway up to the entrance. It was a rather rainy day so we did not have a chance to visit the popular roof top setting; therefore, we headed down to the basement floor to see the wonderful assortment of various food and dessert items. They were all made with detail and were unique. It is well worth a detour to walk through and see all the nice Japanese food packaged for sale. Definitely makes you hungry and ready for a treat! Just head upstairs to the rooftop to enjoy it after your purchase.

Shopping for the best: all top ranged brands are here. Very friendly, respectfull staff. Most of them do not speak English. Very good restaurants and sublime coffe shop. Visit the Art Aquarium museum with a good souvenirshop. Ideal for a rainy day.

Prior to our Japan visit, we read about the wonderful food floors in the major department stores. We weren't prepared for what we experienced when visiting Mitsukoshi's 2 basement take-out food floors. "Overwhelmed" and "stunned" would be adjectives to describe our reaction to the huge and beautiful display of food everywhere around you. Not knowing where to start, our family basically took a look at every display, winding through the crowds to check out food prices. Surprisingly, the food prices were fairly reasonable (sold by gram). The smallest containers could hold enough for one serving. The salads were most beautiful and contained fresh ingredients. We purchased dinner items on two separate nights at this store. On the first night, we shopped there after 7:30 p.m. and realized that they discounted all food items by 20%. There was a mad rush throughout the floor. The most popular packaged food bentos were snatched up quickly. We took the food back to our hotel room to eat. On the second occasion, my daughter asked the information desk where we could eat our take-out food, and we were pleasantly surprised to hear that we could take our food to the 9th floor where there is an indoor and outdoor seating area. Many families with kids were sitting outside while kids could play in the grassy area. We enjoyed eating a leisurely lunch indoors in the spacious air- conditioned room. Great way to spend our last day in Tokyo.

The two sales assistants were talking to each other when I entered the CHLOE section to browse the bags. As soon as I picked up a brown paddington from the shelf, one sales assistant hurried over, she glared at me without saying a word and not even a smile. After I asked her for the price, she pressed the calculator and passed it to me, showing me the price, again without saying a word and no smile. Once she passed me the calculator, she snatched the bag from my hand and placed it back to the shelf. Throughout the whole process, she didn't smile a bit and looked very unfriendly. From how she presented herself, I can feel that she thinks I can't afford the bag. This made this decide not to purchase the bag from this store and contribute to her sales record.

I've been to Japan many times and I've never encountered such a rude & unfriendly sales assistant. Her bad attitude & such customer service is totally unacceptable.

This was one of two Mitsukoshi stores that we visited this trip. Located within the Ginza area, it was very criwded, especially with tourists from the North Asia area literally buying almost everything available, from branded handbags to shoes and apparel.

We loved the basement food and supermarket areas, where you can buy almost all Japanese snacks including Tokyo banana, Calbee flavoured chips, mille cakes and various jellos and puddings, as well as old style items such as red bean cakes in beautiful boxes and packaging.

The supermarket also had a wide range and we bought cooked Kurabata pork, mentaiko (fish eggs) and mozzarell cheese balls as presents for those back home. Staff were kind enough to include small ice packs in the packaging to help ensure freshness.

It was crowded on a weekend so we decided not to brave the crowds on the upper floors, but you should pay a visit just for the experience.

This place is packed with people but it's worth visiting even if you only have time to check out the food hall. And not to forget Laduree has a cafe here that overlooks the street. Get a table there and savour the cakes while you people watch.

For branded goods, the variety and selection here is awesome.

I usually don't write about department stores but this one was very special. The main building was completed in 1935 and in 1999 it was designated as a "historical structure of Tokyo." The welcoming pair of lions at the door are made of Bronze and were reproduced from the lion statues in Trafalgar Square in London. They were installed at this location in 1914. When you enter, the space surprises you but the Statue of Magokoro- The Goddess of Sincerity- takes your breath away. It is magnificent! It represents the philosophy of the store-sincerity. It was installed in 1960! You can see this wonderful piece of art from both floors ...You can also see a lovely pipe organ in the second floor balcony that was from the USA in 1930. There is a theatre on the 6th floor which offers performances with state of the art seating and acoustics. The store was pristine and there were plenty of sales people. They proudly explained all of the aspects of their lovely store. So worth the visit.

This appears to be the most upscale department store on the Ginza. Even if you don’t want to pay the prices, it is worth a visit. The 7th floor has traditional Japanese items. Fun to look at. There are several restaurants. The Korean restaurant was quite good.
