Top ways to experience Kabukicho District
The area
Neighbourhood: Shinjuku
Shinjuku is the commuting capital of Tokyo, and contains the busiest train station in the world. To the west, there's an office district with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office at its center. To the east, there’s a district with long-established department stores, cinemas and theaters. Shinjuku Gyoen is a park originally built as the garden for the Imperial Household. It is quite famous as a venue for cherry-blossom viewing in March and April. In Shinjuku, many restaurants operate all night, and districts such as Omoide Yokocho (Memory Lane) or Shinjuku Golden Machi have back streets filled with tiny restaurants and bars that reflect each owner’s unique taste and style.

Lots of small bars off the beaten path, which felt kind of seedy. Glad I got to see but also happy not to stop in one.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- R ASydney, Australia17 contributionsWorth the visit! This place has great food at very affordable prices: a bowl of delicious ramen+ fried rice and delicious vegetarian goyzas for AUD 15. We visited between 6- 10 pm, it was really busy with people of all ages, including families with young children. However, I can tell the place gets its “Red-light” district vibe after 10:30 pm.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 February 2024

- msa23_2000Chino Hills, California1,477 contributionsFun to walk around and eatI spent an early evening strolling through just people watching. It’s vibrant and fun. I would beware lots of places taking advantage of tourists, but if you want to walk in a street, try some good food at an affordable price, and just feel a fun vibe, this is a great place to do it.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 12 May 2024
- FlyAtNightBrooklin, Canada3,642 contributionsDisappointedI have visited and stayed in Kabukicho many times, and yes I know that it is Tokyo's red light district. In the past, stepping over vomit and around passed out people happened occasionally. On this most recent trip we spent 2 nights in Kabukicho and returned to the hotel both evenings after 2 AM. Walking north from Shinjuku station we noticed a number of people passed out on the streets and lots of vomit. Heading out from the hotel early on the following mornings I was shocked by the number of beer and liquor cans strewn everywhere. It was upsetting as I have never seen so much trash on the streets.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 30 September 2024

Nice place to shop and dine. Very busy part of town .
We stayed at the Godzilla hotel, (hotel gracery Shinjuku).
One interesting activity that my husband and sons enjoyed was riding the go kart in the busy streets of Tokyo and vicinity .would recommend the hotel and this activity.

A decently large block of small business areas are blocked off with many bars, arcade and night life areas that I highly recommend visiting at least once during your time there. It’s right off the Shinjuku station so it’s easily accessible. Keep in mind that the station closed at 12 so many people will leave by then. If you want to explore Tokoyo nigh life and local food I highly recommend coming here!!

During our research, we read in some blogs to avoid staying or coming to this red light district as unsafe, esp at night. Frankly, after coming both in day & night, we confirm this place is as safe as any other areas in Shinjuku. This place is crowded/packed with tourists & locals both day & night. Just like anywhere in Shinjuku. Never once do we felt unsafe or threatened. Yes there were obvious bars & red lights activities going on but they don't harass or bug you. It's a colorful, bright & nice place to visit or eat. Here u can see the famous Godzilla head at top of Hotel Gracery. Of course common sense must prevail in any circumstances. Don't stay till early morning hours where most crowds are gone if u r just here for shopping/ eating.

Definitely worth having a walk around, seeing the nightlife come alive. I can't imagine any other place in Tokyo having the same energy as this place. So much food and entertainment
Just beware of shady guys coming up to ask you for stuff, best to ignore

Godzilla Road is full of shops on Kabukicho's Main Street, but some of them can be taken to shops that cost more than Catch expected.
At Beef Kitchen Stand, a meat bar on Godzilla Road in Kabukicho, you can enjoy snacks from 99 yen to 398 yen (excluding tax), which is very cheap but of high quality.
Drinks are also reasonable, including highball for 299 yen and spilled wine for 399 yen. The food is all small portions, and you can eat a variety of things little by little, such that you can go alone and eat many dishes.
I think it is safe and quite convenient for people who want to drink.

For me Shinjuku, and especially Kabuchiko, is what is Tokyo is about. Big lights, nightlife, bars, restaurants, very busy streets, flashing signs, the huge Godzilla on top of hotel Gracery, "entertainment" places etc. You will find whatever food you crave. You can find love motels, places to get a "massage", bars, golden gai, pachinko places, karaoke rooms etc. I am a woman and not into most of the things I have previously mentionned, but I still find Kabuchiko very fascinating and like to spend the evenings there, and afterwards "escape" to my hotel room in a slightly quieter area in Nishi Shinjuku. Also, even though some parts of Kabuchiko are very much "red light district style", I have never felt uncomfortable or unsafe there.

Kabukicho is an area that spans a few blocks. Most restaurants open for lunch and dinner. Some do open 24 hours and some open for breakfast as early as 9am. There are more actions starting from evening all through to late night.

Do the Hotel have an airport shuttle service for departing guests?
Written 3 October 2015
There is an airport limousine bus stop nearby the Shinjuku Station, better ask your hotel for directions.
