This is such a fun and colorful area. Lots of people, shopping, and food. Lots of small bars off the beaten path, which felt kind of seedy. Glad I got to see but also happy not to stop in one.

This place has great food at very affordable prices: a bowl of delicious ramen+ fried rice and delicious vegetarian goyzas for AUD 15. We visited between 6- 10 pm, it was really busy with people of all ages, including families with young children. However, I can tell the place gets its “Red-light” district vibe after 10:30 pm.

Shinjuku is One of the most happening area of Tokyo. Vibrant atmosphere, plenty of small bars in narrow lanes,including karaoke bars at Golden Gai. 5 minutes walk from Shinjuku Station. It is always crowded and well lit and safe ( although it's very popular as RED LIGHT AREA but that's after around 10pm ). It is always busy due to plenty of restaurants, very popular in this area for tax free shopping..

I spent an early evening strolling through just people watching. It’s vibrant and fun. I would beware lots of places taking advantage of tourists, but if you want to walk in a street, try some good food at an affordable price, and just feel a fun vibe, this is a great place to do it.

I have visited and stayed in Kabukicho many times, and yes I know that it is Tokyo's red light district. In the past, stepping over vomit and around passed out people happened occasionally. On this most recent trip we spent 2 nights in Kabukicho and returned to the hotel both evenings after 2 AM. Walking north from Shinjuku station we noticed a number of people passed out on the streets and lots of vomit. Heading out from the hotel early on the following mornings I was shocked by the number of beer and liquor cans strewn everywhere. It was upsetting as I have never seen so much trash on the streets.
