was blown away by the selection available. Purchase food here and take lift upstairs to the Garden on level 7 to enjoy them. There are vending machines and toilets available on the roof top Gardens.

Lovely store. The special find this time is the Apothecary selling organic skin care and cosmetics on B2.

Anyway, the attitude of the staff and the cleanliness of the place were awful.
They looked like normal staff, but
about 5-6 staff members were staring at me with mocking smirks on their faces, so I became suspicious and tried to approach, but the moment I was hit by a terrible stench (like a mixture of vomit and feces).
There were no other customers around, so it was obvious that it was the staff's smell.
I immediately evacuated the store.
As a Japanese person, I feel embarrassed just thinking that a store like this exists in Japan.

By far the best and exclusive department store in Shinjuku. Beautiful staff and goods we don’t see in Australia. Make sure you find the kimono department and admire the wonderful unknown ritual and fabrics. Lower basement floor has the world’s greatest food hall. Take your platinum card.

I bought a piece of clothing (regular price item) here as a gift and enquired if I could exchange it, which Isetan confirmed. When I actually wanted to exchange it only 3 days later for another (similarly priced) item, the store refused to take it back as they claim the clothing looks worn! The gift receiver only tried the clothing on, like they would have done so in a changing room, but it is my word against the shop's and they simply refused.

We actually travelled up to Shinjuku just to check Isetan, as well as the red-light district. As others have mentioned, you should not miss the basement supermarket and snacks and sweet stalls, where you can find things ranging from cheesecakes to fried pork tonkatsu, as well as fresh crabs and fish.
We headed there for dinner but were rather disappointed that the basement area, though you can find bento boxes and cooked food, does not really have chairs and tables for the consumption of food. For that, you need to go up to the 7th floor, where there are some restaurants, including Japanses-Italian and Japanese-French food. The choices were not that great, to be honest, and we ended up eating at a restaurant which specialised in tempura and soba noodles. We could have actually eaten better and more cheaply at the ramen eateries that line the Shinjuku station from end to end.
So, Isetan is a good place to visit to check out high-end clothes and to see the basement food hall, but not to have dinner.

It is connected to the Shinjuku Sanchome subway station. On 10 floors this department store has everything you can think of buying. The only problem is: everything is real expensive. If you are not planning to spend tons of money, you may want to do your shopping in another department store or elsewhere. The store has 1 floor with food items, 1 floor with restaurants, several floors with women's clothes and accessories, another floor with household goods, etc. There is even a smaller store behind the main building that has men's clothes. Other department stores like Tobu, Seibu, Mitsukoshi have similar layouts. They may not sell all the same luxury brands and thus tend to have lower prices. Nevertheless, if you plan on spending 5,400 Yen on a pound of grapes, you can easily do that at Mitsukoshi, too.
If you like to window shop for food, I encourage you to go to the ground floor of Isetan or any of the above department stores and you will be overwhelmed by their selection. Sadly, you can only buy the food but not consume it there. Be aware that some of the foods need to be steamed, microwaved or otherwise heated before they can be consumed. The friendly sales people will likely tell you in Japanese and, if you are lucky, may even have a laminated sheet of paper handy that will tell you in English.
Long story short: This is a very expensive department store which sells top brands. Window shopping may be the only activity there for most readers. We did our shopping in other department stores and regular stores.

In addition to the twelve floors of shopping, you'll be amazed at the Basement Food Court levels. I can only compare it to the Harrods Food Hall in London, UK. Amid all the hustle and bustle you can find delicacies from far and wide including Parisien and Belgian chocolates, Kobe Beef and Flowers. Staff are hardworking and can help direct you to wherever you need to go. Reminder that with the crowds this can be retail hell, but you'll walk away with some rewards for your time well spent.

What time does the Shinjuku food hall close?

The store is open from 10:30AM–8:00PM every day. If you go to the food hall after 7:00PM you will find the selections getting limited/sold-out. At 7:30PM many of the vendors will put their remaining items on sale and you can get 20-30% off regular prices. It gets pretty crowded though.

Welcome to Tokyo. It's pretty hard to cross the road in Shinjuku, so I suggsest walking the underground walkway. If you are interested in another department store, Takashimaya, you can go to Isetan store from the underground of Takashimaya, too. Both stores are connected with the underground walkway, and it's safe to walk. Enjoy your stay and shopping.

They have good sales- call Isetan Foreign Customer Service and tell them what you are looking for and ask if there will be a sale. Sales both on shopping floors and in promotion areas.
Another good place to shop is Komehyo, a consignment department store across the street from the Hermes side window of Isetan.
