Top ways to experience Ueno District and similar attractions

The area
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Good area to stay

Ueno is a good base for exploring Tokyo. Ueno station is a major station and Ueno park is very popular, especially for cherry blossoms viewing. Plenty of food and shopping in this area.

Ameyayokocho Market
Dec 2019 • Couples
There are lots of retail shops indoors and outdoors selling everything of brands or locally made. Many restaurants and roadside snacks line the streets. I was there on a weekday. You would love this area if you like crowds. The streets were simply packed with visitors. Don’t know what it’s like at the weekend. Must be fun.

We nt for the shopping and the atmosphere

If you are looking for good quality at reasonable prices, this is the place to go. I was looking for some gold jewelry and the prices are definitely better here than anywhere else in Tokyo I tried. The hustle and bustle was amazing, so many people, eating and drinking and chatting. The reason it doesn't get 5 star is because it is the only place in Japan that wasn't as clean as a whistle. Great area

We came to Ueno to see the zoo primarily, however we come to realize that it’s a great place for families with children, smaller crowd, family friendly pavements and spaces, and more rest points so that it’s breathable, will come back here again with my family. Strongly recommended for families with young children.

Walk Around
Jun 2019
We arrived early at Ueno and had a couple of hours to burn before checking in.
We found a storage facility to store our bags while we walked around the area.
Lots of interesting Malls, shops and eateries to check out while ur in the vicinity. Good to get ur bearings and identity the nearest subway/metro to your hotel.
Less crowded compared to other parts of Tokyo City

Good to walk around at night with lots of shops and restaurants
Jun 2019 • Family
Good to walk around at night with lots of shops and restaurants. Lively area with lots of locals and tourists.

Worth a visit if you are in Tokyo on multiple nights as it's not as crazy as Shibuya or Shinjuku area but more than enough to see and do for a night.
