Top ways to experience Ueno Park
The area
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

- Jeff KPittsburgh, Pennsylvania2,471 contributionsVery Enjoyable ParkWe were a little early to catch the cherry blossoms but liked this park a lot, notwithstanding the bare trees. It’s easy to get here via the subway and there’s a lot to see. We visited two museums, a temple, strolled the park and ate lunch from the street vendors. Everything is very convenient. Lots of bathrooms, too. Highly recommended.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 March 2024

There's street performers and lots to do & see. The shrines are beautiful, the National museum is really interesting. The park is a popular tourist spot with a museum, art gallery, zoo, temple, and more, attracting many visitors. There are about 1,200 cherry trees in the park, and it is also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot that is crowded with many people every year during the cherry blossom season.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 April 2024

This is a lovely park, with a street lined with Sakura trees. Just get off at Ueno station and you’ll be right there. Your JR pass will get you there if you have one. Lots of food stalls and karaoke happening!Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 April 2024
- ShannonMelbourne, Australia1,160 contributionsMuseums & MarketsRecommend checking on when markets are held here, as we visited during the last weekend of March and there was a market held at the centre of the park. Food, alcohol, deserts were sold amongst other things. All the museums centre towards this park but some were closed during our visit. Theres a decent amount of park benches everywhere and some cherry blossoms were blooming on our visit. RecommendedVisited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 April 2024
- Josh DNew York City, New York953 contributionsMuy bueno!!You may wonder why my title is in Spanish but it means very good and has the name of the park in it!! I happen to enjoy parks a lot and being near trees and plants and people watching!! I went to a museum here and the zoo and also went to see the cherry blossoms!! My parents and sisters always ask me about my lady love interests when I FaceTime with them here and they said to bring a lady to the cherry blossoms!! I happen to have no luck with my love life and so I had to look at them by myself!! I know you are all probably crying now hearing about this but I believe one day I will find somebody!! I saw a truck with Cuban sandwiches and so I got one and a lemonade and sat down to look at the trees!! It was a good time so you all should come here!!Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 April 2024

Is it legitimate to have your say on this very popular park without having visited some significant parts, starting with the zoo? I asked myself this for a long time before deciding yes, also because I had been able to enjoy the pleasant aesthetic impact and the lively external atmosphere of the small temple located in the vast spaces of this place, but not the interiors, having arrived there a few minutes later. the closure. However, they believe that, in addition to the beautiful temple in question, the presence of the magnificent National Museum and that of a teeming crowd of Tokyoites intent on spending a few hours of relaxation there (also made precarious by the tourist invasion) is enough to make Ueno Park considered one of the major popular attractions of the Japanese capital. Although putting the presence of some less than refined restaurants on the negative side of the scale.

We enjoyed our stay in the park so much. You can easily spend the whole day there. There was still some bloom. We looked at the views, took the padel boat (I wanted to skip it and then was so happy we didn’t – we took the pedal boat for 3), looked inside the temples, eat from the vendors, we had delicious Yakitori – the best we had in Japan and then went to one of the museums – the nature and science museum. We had much fun.

Spent a rainy afternoon walking around the park after seeing the Tokyo National Museum. One of the largest green spaces in Tokyo, its too big a park to see everything in a single day, but there are beautiful gardens, a lake, a zoo, multiple shrines and temples (including one in the middle of the lake), a theater, a baseball pitch (!) and then the many many many museums, memorials and commemorative statues. There was an antique market on when we were there too. I imagine when the cherry blossoms are out, it would be even nicer. Its obviously a place where a lot of people who live in Tokyo come to run, walk, picnic, and just relax. Its also a historically important place: one of Japan's first public parks, it served as an evacuation site during the bombing of Tokyo in 1945. Apparently the mausoleum where Tokugawa Ieyasu is enshrined is somewhere in there too but I honestly didn't find it. Again, its a massive park. You won't be able to do it all in one day, or even two. But if you make repeated trips to Tokyo, its worth going back and seeing a little at a time. It would be a great place for a run as well.

Our accommodation in Tokyo was a short bus ride to this park .
The first time we went , we didn’t realise it was a public holiday.
It was really very busy , but once we wandered away from the lake and the zoo it was a lot quieter .
It just happened to be a very sunny + warm 24c day , fortunately there is lots of shade and places to get food and drinks .
Our next visit , was a quiet weekday .
We had already visited the shrine , so this time we opted to go to the museum of art .
Very relaxing and pleasant afternoon out

It's spacious and a lovely place where nature and culture merge.
There are also museums and museums, and it is fulfilling to be able to experience art while walking around.
I remember when I was a kid, we used to go for walks and have fun together!

This park in Tokyo is underrated. It is beautiful with fabulous access to the Tokyo Zoo and the National museum. It is spacious and lots of side lanes with quiet peaceful areas , the Fountain area at far end of park is beautiful at night.
One of the hidden gems is the 5 storey Pagoda and Golden Shrine which you have to pay a small charge to enter. But it is worth the cost. A quiet corner near the pagoda, left of the zoo entrance.

The central park is beautiful to visit in spring or autumn. The cool, beautiful and clean atmosphere can calm the day away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Tokyo. While breathing fresh air.

Ueno Park is home to a variety of cultural buildings, including museums and a zoo. It is directly connected to Ueno Station, making it easily accessible. In spring, cherry blossoms blossom all over the place.

The park is right outside the JR Ueno Station Park Exit. It's an urban oasis where art galleries, museums and other cultural facilities are concentrated. It's spacious and fun to stroll around.

Hello, I was wondering how much time I should reasonably allocate to see Ueno Park and the Museum of Nature and Science as a solo traveler. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Would 3 hours be enough to see the museum and maybe the zoo? We have 5.5 hours of layover time from Narita. I'm more interested in seeing Ueno Park than the places in Narita, but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks.
Written 14 October 2018
It takes 1 hour each way from narita airport to the city. That's 2 hours gone already and it cost $25 each way on the airport express train. At the train terminal, you would have to take a taxi or subway to your site. You would have a two hours only to see one site. Not worth it in my opinion. Best to see something at or near airport.

Is it similar to Golden Gate Park in San Francisco or Central Park in New York in a sense? Like it’s a huge park that you need more time to explore and enjoy how locals enjoy the park, rather than just visiting for a bit?
Written 3 October 2018
I can't compare because i didn't visit San Francisco yet.
Ueno Park was very nice especially during sakura (cherry blossom) end of March April.
There's a lot to see in Ueno Park like zoo, museum etc. Don't missed to visit Ueno if you are in Tokyo.

I want to go to Japan next week to see the cherry blossoms is this a good time to go or not ? It might be late to see it ? Or should I still see the flowers ? Thank you so much my fellow readers for taking your time to answer this question

Ueno Park is the most 'user friendly' place so to speak. It is astonishly beautiful no matter what time of the year you visit. PLUS! Galleries,Museums, Temples and Shrines. There is also a Zoo ... I am not intersted as caged animals are against my believes, but some people enjoy it. So, I am not in the positin to make comments about the Zoo as never entered.
The park is spectatular any time of the year you visit. You can easily spend a whole day there if so inclined.
Lotus lake is to die for.
Don't get me stared as I could go for ever.;-) Absolutely magcal place no matter what time of the year you visit. Enjoy!
