We lived in this area for a year in 1979 and really it has hardly changed. The wonderful china and pottery shop is still there as well as a lot of the eateries. One new addition is a pet shop for dogs and cats. It has also become a mecca for anime stores on the upper floors. There is a veritable maze of small streets branching off the Broadway, all of them worth exploring for intriguing small restaurants.

It is so much fun to watch your ice cream being made, the staff is so clever. It is amazing that the ice cream holds it's shape too, and let me tell you this - it is THE coldest ice cream that we have ever eaten. The flavours are delicious and it is great value for money. Cannot wait to go back again when we are able to travel.

Nakano Broadway is snapshot of Tokyo before the bubble.
Mandrake has multiple storefronts in the building specializing in the resale of pop culture collectibles, but along the edges an in the corners, you can see smaller businesses ranging from purveyors of doll parts to snack bars to shuttered spaces from back when having enough money

My wife and I came here as a last-ditch attempt to find some Mother (Earthbound) merchandise as we had been largely unsuccessful (we eventually did find a Mother 1 gacha machine at the Rox mall in Asakusa, unbelievably). No matter what anime, video game etc. thing you like, if it was ever even remotely popular in Japan you will find something for it here (there were Mother 1/2 gacha toys for sale in a store that seemed to sell nothing but gacha toys? This was also the first time I truly appreciated how serious Gachapon are in Japan, because the place was absolutely heaving and I saw a few locals spend about £200 on four little figurines for a series I didn’t recognise).
Some of the items are expensive, but overall Nakano Broadway is a really interesting place to visit. We didn’t know what a lot of the things were but it’s a fascinating little spot to see some authentic Japanese popular culture. There was also some pretty good street food in amongst the manga and anime stuff.

This is a wonderful experience for fans of anime, manga, etc. It is essentially a mall with many small stalls/shops full of merchandise. New and antique. It has a little of everything. Worth a walk through, if you are a fan.

This is a place for those who are truly enthusiasts in robots, anime stuffs. Mandarake occupied many floors, each floor focusing on certain products only. Staffs were friendly and was able to assist us. A foreigner working there was able to explain to us some things in good English. We were glad he was there to assist us.

There's this small, little known shop at the 2nd floor of the Nakano Broadway Mall in Nakano. It's the Nozaki Coin Shop. Run by a kindly, elderly couple, I have been here quite a few times before.
The shop is a delight for
Coin collectors of all kinds. Old Japanese silver coins, as well as new commemorative coins, are here. Prices are very fair, I should think.
Definitely a must-go to place whenever you're in Tokyo. Just a 5 minute walk from JR Nakano Station on the Chuo Line.

In addition to go Akihabara, Nakano Broadway (Japanese: 中野ブロードウェイ) is actually the place who anime fans and game fans must go. It is a multi-story shopping complex famous for a variety of stores selling anime, manga, and popular culture goods as well as other specialty and everyday items.

Nakano Broadway is not the only location for Mandrake shops in the greater Tokyo area, but it is the best. This visit, I had great success with some vintage Japanese SF magazines and paperbacks. Staff is always friendly, always willing to go above and beyond to help you find the right items. Easily accessible via the Chuo Line (JR Train) from Tokyo Station...... the entrance for the Nakano Broadway Mall is about 300 meters from the train station exit. Plenty of places for a sit-down lunch or take-away for strolling the mall.... dozens of Mandrake store-fronts. Be mindful that the second floor is accessible ONLY by the stairs..... so easily overlooked if you use the escalators. Have FUN !!!!

Hi from Greece
I visit Tokyo, end of April 2019 (Easter period) and one of my dream is place like this. I collecti Anime Figures from eBay until today, so hope to find cheap and better quality in Nakano. This place you show, have second hand figures ? Only figures i want...
Also if you know, there is some festival or show with Anime cosplay in this period (24-30 April) somewhere in Tokyo?
Thank you !

Most shops do only sell second hand figures. I’ve seen a few with ‘new’ figures, but they are ones mostly won from arcade machines and then sold to the shops.

I have been looking for life size statues in Tokyo and I’ve been sent to Nakano Broadway but could just find one Kinnikuman. Are there any other places around Tokyo where I could find a life size replica (like a sideshow or oxmox statue)?

I'm visiting both Akihabara and Nakano Broadway, and I really want to buy anime merch, so roughy how much should I bring (in yen), considering that I'm sort of a major shopaholic...?

It really depends on your wish list and how much you can budget for your anime addiction. You may find a wonderland of anime choices at both destinations. I can say from my experience that I was able to visit Nakano Broadway twice on my trip, so the first time I bought 8 dolls that I was super happy with (I'm a doll freak) and left some money for the next few days' sightseeing, eating and souvenir shopping, but by the last day I decided I didn't need to spend more on souvenirs and went back and got 5 more dolls that had caught my eye. I must have spent about 50,000 yen the first day and about 20,000 more when I went back.
