We rented a Jeep from the Thousand Lakes campground and took it down this road. The road was not bad at all - it was a little bumpy in some parts due to the road being washed out. The river was not high at all...More

I have done the loop before. Be sure to check with the visitor center to see how high is the Fremont river before crossing it. This time, I focused on the Temples of the Sun and Moon in Cathedral Valley. I did a practice drive...More

We did not take the whole Cathedral Valley Loop. Our guide suggested that the best use of our time would be to go directly to the formations called Temple of the Sun and Moon for the sunrise, then leave the park to go to Goblin...More

Best enjoyed by a higher clearance 4wd vehicle, and perhaps with at least one other vehicle, this area is remote and there are no services. So gas up, bring a lunch, and enjoy! It is well worth the trip.

The Cathedral Valley drive is a loop that can be divided into two halves. We started with the southwestern half of the loop, Hartnet Road, which begins with a ford of the Freemont River and then runs north of the South Desert. We camped overnight...More

I think the cathedral Valley loop drive is interesting, but I would wouldn't call it a "must see". There's plenty of empty desert on this drive. The Temple of the Sun and Moon are quite interesting, but it takes almost 2 hours to get there...More

This is a VERY brutal drive. We took our high clearance vehicle in July 2016 for this "road" trip. You will travel 52 miles in about 7.5 hours (this is NO joke). There are NO restrooms. Be prepared to bring food and lots of water....More

As with most landscape areas sunrise and sunset offer the best photo opportunities. Since traveling the loop takes 6-9 hours depending on how long you stop for, it is obviously not possible to be everywhere in perfect... More

Five hours would be a fairly quick loop, I drive tours around the loop and typically take 8 hours (Torrey to Torrey) including a short lunch break. Just the dirt section takes about 6 hours of that I estimate.

I'm not sure who you are asking with this question but in general rental car insurance does not cover driving on dirt roads.
