Available to cavern visitors on the self-guided Big Room Tour, this is at the middle of the walking tour and furthest from your starting point. This formation is unlike many others in the cavern, in that it appears as "just a hole". Remembering how the...More

Another one of the amazing things to see in the Big Room at Carlsbad Caverns! If you keep it in the proper historical perspective this is an amazing thing, also in low light it is very believable as it is described.

We saw The Bottomless Pit while we walked the path around The Big Room Route. Actually...we saw it but we didn't 'see it' because it appears as a large black opening in the rocky area. You really can't see down in it but there is...More

Not entirely sure why this is an attraction within itself, as it is just another feature inside the cave on the Big Room trail. The sheer size of it is still neat!

The Bottomless Pit is located in the far reaches of the Big Room and a little bit past the halfway point of the self-guided tour. Of course not really bottomless, it is 140 feet (43m) deep and angled such that the bottom cannot be seen...More

Theres no real good angle to take a picture, but what you can see is a dark bottomless pit with an old rope and board latter.

Apparently, they have now discovered that this isn't really bottomless but it certainly looks it. There is an interesting info board just next to this telling you about it.

The Caverns are so amazing. The Bottomless Pit is one of the many impressive formations in the caverns. It looks like an abyss, but it is just a very deep pit. There is so much to see in the Caverns.

There are so many places in the cavern it's unreal. This is just one of the many marvels in the cave system. Everything is labeled so you know what you are looking at. Bring a small light to help on the way.
