This picnic area is completely opened now and fully thriving after the fires. The water was flowing Sunday and it was full again with people. There are lots of places to pull in by the water and bbq pits and picnic tables. Great spot to relax and hear the water flowing in the river and admire the beautiful stones and... More

Going to the chimneys picnic area has a lot of memories for me. This is where I used to go as a child with my parents in the 70s and 80s. Try to get a spot next to the river, relax and enjoy your day.

The Chimneys Picnic Area is open and was thriving in late March. It wasn't full like I have seen it in the summer, but a couple dozen people besides us were there enjoying the view out over the park and down toward Sugarlands and Gatlinburg. I did take away one star because the view up to the Chimney Tops is... More

Chimney tops trail is closed indefinitely due to fires, chimney tops picnic area (lower elevation than the trail) is open and appears untouched by the fires from fall 2016

We stopped here to enjoy lunch last fall while on vacation. We love to hike the smokies and this spot has alot to explore. There are plenty of picnic tables and also a decent bathroom. Be sure to check out the creek when your done eating and as always clean up and carry out your trash!!

Due to the Chimney Tops fire that burned some 11,000 acres in November 2016 (as well as destroying more than 2,000 buildings and killed 14 in the Gatlinburg area), Chimneys Picnic Area will remain closed "for a long time," according to some Park rangers. The fire here was so intense it changed the composition of the soil, and a team... More

Best picnic area on the Tennessee side of the Smokies....nice stream that runs to the left of the picnic area...but be aware this has always been one of the areas most frequented by black bears. only about fifteen to twenty minutes outside of Gatlinburg.

This area is by far one of if not the best picnic area in the park. It appears the wild fires stole some if not all it's beauty. No way to know until it is opened back up. For now, it is closed until further notice. :(

We picnic here frequently (but only in the "off" season as spots can be hard to come by "in season") and my grandson loves it but it appears it has been at least partially destroyed by the recent wildfires. It and the Trailhead up the road are closed until further notice.
