It's about 6 miles long. I would suggest doing the trail backwards as there is a very steep trail up out of the caldera at the end. You will feel heat under the lava dome. Don't stick your fingers into the small holes and cracks...More

When can you hike across a volcanic crater?! This was a great hike down through a forest, across a crater, and then back up and out through a forest. Wonderful picture opportunities and super fun to follow the Ahu (stacked rocks across the crater floor)....More

When we were at the top looking down into the crater, it seemed like it must be an exaggeration that the trail actually takes you across the crater floor. But it does! It was so beautiful and otherworldly- plus walking through lush forests at the...More

It rained lightly during most of our time hiking, but it didn't make this hike any less amazing. The terrain is impossible to describe, with steam poking up periodically. A highlight of our visit to the Big Island.

The Kilauea Iki trail seemed to be the most interesting thing to do in the park. The steam vents were incredibly boring, I much prefer experiencing something rather than watching it. We started at 10:00 and the lot was fairly empty. The downside to this...More

After seeing the steam vents, museum and lava tube, we decided to do a quick hike to the crater. We started at the lava tube and walked down. It took about 15 minutes to get to the crater. Amazing. It's like walking on the moon....More

take water and snacks, wear decent shoes and don't forget your sunhat. Take time to stop and picture where you are, in the middle of a lava lake. Wow.

What a cool thing to be able to do! Walking across lava with stem vents billowing across the crater! I feel that this is a must-do on a trip to Big Island. Hike wasn't too bad, until we had to go back up. Then it...More

We found this hike to be a let down. Perhaps because the day before we'd done an amazing 11.5 RT hike on the totally abandoned Naulu Trail to the Napau Crater overlook, which is 2 miles away from the active Pu'u O'o' volcano. That trail...More

Drive to the hike's entrance. Once there, start the trail by taking the path on the right. The left will take you towards the volcano tube...which you will see at the end of your 5.2 mile hike. If you begin your hike on the right...More

I have an illness that makes strenuous walking very hard. Will I be able to do this? We are not staying at any of the pick up spots. Is there a place to leave our car? How far is this from Kapaau?

It has now been a few years since I was there, but I recall only a somewhat strenuous part up and down (in the shade of foliage) at the beginning and end of the hike. The middle is flat and easy, but can be sunny, so bring... More
Can we just hike this on our own? How do we find it?

According to the National Park Service website: "Trail Begins: At the Kīlauea Iki parking lot on Crater Rim Drive. You may go either way from the trailhead. Going left will take you to the Thurston Lava Tube parking lot and... More
