We were here on the morning and did the hike around the Kipuka. This is a lovely place and in parts there is dense vegetation and lots of lovely birdsong. It is a place of great interest but sadly the sign at the car park can only be described as cursory and when we were then the map dispenser was... More

I had the good fortune to go on a walk with the forest ranger who called this place her "favorite spot in the world." With that kind of love and enthusiasm she was contagious. I enjoyed learning about the birds, plants, and history of this special place.

Beyond the normal vistas and crowds at Volcano NP, a short drive up Mauna Loa Road delivers you to a Kipuka is an area of older vegetation surrounded by a more recent lava flow from Mauna Loa. There are very ancient Koa trees here as well as an abundance of rare Hawaiian birds (as well as introduced species). The walk... More

This is a great trail through an old growth stand of Hawaiian rain forest. You can walk the trail in 20 to 30 minutes. we took 2 hours as we would stop and just take in the ambiance.

uncrowded, kipuka trail. It is in the process of being restored to native plants. Lots of birdsong, but not many birds seen. Lots of interesting plants and beautiful flowers.

You will need to drive up in the mountain in order to reach the trail head, but ounce up there, the scenery is beautiful, there is a little picnic place 100 feet down the trail head entry point, the nearby Silver woods are also interesting on that side of the mountain.

Did this short hike - again no other people - after we spent 3 hours on the desert trip across the road. Quite a change. Interesting large rainforest ferns. Did not see many birds.

Have taken this trail many times and recommend it to bird watchers. You will find most of the forest birds here.

What a transformative walk. There are so many amazing varieties of bird there. If your lucky, you can catch the Nene family walking together in the middle of the road going up toward lookout. There are beautiful birds you can enjoy listening to or photographing, but they aren't the only interesting creatures in the woods. There is rich history on... More

This is a great circular 2 mile easy hike through dry forest. The flora is really interesting and there are little plaques telling you what the different trees are. The green canopy gives welcome cover from the sun and you can hear the birds in the trees. Top tips would be wear insect repellent, bring binoculars, bring water, don't bring... More
