A very diverse trail. Pay the small $2 fee for the little information pamphlet and take it with you on the hike - it is full of interesting and educational information that relate to the numbered markers along the trail. Wear proper shoes as you're hiking on a lava field with uneven surfaces, and dress appropriately for the weather. Walking... More

I visit this place by helicopter. Very good pilot. The trip is a little shorter that I imagined. A tip: must have wind protection equipment, because the helicopter doesn't have doors.

At the beginning of the trail you can buy a book for $2 that explains what you see at the 16 different points along the way. I think with the stops it took us 1.5 hours form start to end with the panoramic view. Without stoping it more 40 minutes to go back to the start of the trail. The... More

This was a beautiful trail... but the weather here plays a spoil-sport. If it is windy & cloudy, one cannot enjoy the trail at all ! Otherwise, the trail is worth the walk !!!

Look at old craters ans lava flows. This road ends in latest lava flow and may be cutoff at end for safety. When we went we had 4 mile walk to lava and 1 mile walk on coldish lava to see molten lava. However, this changes all the time. Note that at night you need your own lights.

We were driving along crater road in February 2011. We got out of the car and decided to check out some of the trail. We took some pics. We never saw the nene bird which there were signs to be cautious not to hit along the road. More devastated areas. Some green areas that have comeback from the destructive power... More

This short and easy hike takes you through different kinds of lava flows and ends at an overlook with a spectacular view.

This terrain is about a decade younger than Kilauea Iki. Definitely get the $2 trail guide pamphlet at the trail head for explanation of sights along the hike that you likely wouldn't notice or understand otherwise. I can imagine if the trail were wet it might be easy to go off course. When it's dry you can easily see the... More

Nice level walk thru the lava fields - plus the Nenes like to hang out in this area. Can be a short or long hike. Interesting vegetation.

The trail is very interesting because of the many coloured rocks, they are almost opalesques. Can't imagine the beauty of the small pieces of rock. I placed a small one on my finger, and one can almost make believe it is some sort of black diamond. There are a'a as well as Hapoepoe rock formation. But the most interesting was... More
