This area, which is much less-traveled than the adjacent Hidden Valley, is absolutely stunning and perfect for both rock climbers and hikers alike. When I visited, I saw a few groups lead climbing, and one group trad climbing. The rocks are rated at about a 5.9...definitely not for the faint of heart! I hiked through this jungle of rock, and... Came to Joshua Tree National Park for a day visit on the National Parks Service 100th birthday. I went solo with my dog. Although hiking trails for dogs are prohibited you can still walk around. Before entering the park we went here to the Wonderland of Rocks which was more of the back country. Very nice area full of rock... More

Granite boulders are the name of the game in this area. Individual huge boulders as well as piles of boulders make for really interesting photographs. Experiment with mono photographs for contrast. Joshua trees and various cactus are throughout the area. Watch for lizards and desert tortoises. Easy hiking for the family.

The Wonderland of Rocks can be a confusing area. Our experience is to access The Wonderland Rocks area just to the right of entering The Barker Dam Loop. There is a trail for part of the way which seems to follow a wash. There are amazing formations to be seen along this trail with many healthy cactus specimens. Formations such... More

We only had a day to spend at JT this trip and there are a lot of stops that one can choose from. We did stop at Jumbo rocks and Wonderland of Rocks. We love them both but really liked the Wonderland of rocks for a 2-3 hour hike, climb, and bouldering excursion. We could wander through the rocks and... More

Is to hike a mile up the Boy Scout Trail from the trail head off Park Boulevard, a flat easy hike across Joshua tree habitat and then take the 2.25 mile spur to Willow Hole which is also flat and easy hiking. A short distance up the Willow Hole spur and you start to enter between ridges formed by the... More

The Wonderland of Rocks is a backcountry area in the north central portion of Joshua Tree National Park that is a maze of rock and boulder piles. The area is excellent for rock climbing and sighting desert bighorn sheep but difficult to navigate and easy to get lost amongst the rock. There are no establish trails through this area but...
