While planning out trip to Lassen Volcanic National Park, there were two trails that I really wanted to hike, Bumpass Hell and Mount Lassen. We (my wife, her sister and me; all in our early 50s and in good shape) completed both hikes and this combination really provided a wonderful overview of the park. We had two full days to... More

The hike is pretty moderate and if you are in good shape, and are used to hiking then it should not take more than an hour to reach down to Bumpass Hell. It is a total of 3-4 miles round trip and it can get very hot here during summers so check the weather and carry plenty of water along... More

A 1.3 mile hike over a moderately difficult terrain, but very worthwhile. Take a camera and stay on the trail.

Though most places rate this hike as "moderate", its pretty tough to do with kids 5 and under (and almost impossible to do with a stroller). First, the hiking trail is exposed to about 200 feet drops at several stretches. Second, the final leg of the trail is a pretty steep downhill to the sulphur vents and pools, and the... More

Could have been better weather (50's and very windy). Trail is easy to find with large parking area. Some areas are a little close to comfort to 3,000 foot drops but just walk careful. I am Not sure I would feel comfortable with small children walking so close to edge but 3mi is a little long for that young. The... More

This is a must see in Lassen. We were there with snow on the trail but not so much to make it difficult to pass. Beautiful views along the trail that culminates in the pictured walkways through the sulfur vents.

We loved this moderate hike to the thermal area. It felt like a mini-Yellowstone. Bring your camera, but be careful not to get the lens too close to the steam.

A tricky hike but well worth the effort. Spectacular scenery culminating in a sulphurous hell hole of bubbling mud steaming vents and colorful chemicals. Poor old Bumpass who lost a leg after falling through the crust - they didn't have wooden walkways in those days!

The hike is great. Slow grade upwards & then down to Bumpass Hell. Oozing, bubbling mass of sulfurous goo. Smelly & warm! Fine mist fell to help with the heat generated by the ooze. Boardwalk needs some screws screwed back down into the 2x6 wood planks. The composite boards also showing wear. The heat is definitely effecting them. Everyone out... More

The three mile round trip hike from the parking lot to Bumpass Hell is beautiful. The trailing a little dusty. Wear layers it was 45F and a cold wind when we started. This is a popular trail and worth the visit.
