This is a popular Mountian to summit as it is the highest in the lower 48 states! So, we attempted to hike up to the summit in May for one day, but wasn't successful. Started our hike at 3:30 am and just about when we were close to summit crest, it bacame too windy and too late for the turn... More

There wasn't much out there about hiking this trail apart from tales of woe on the difficulty and danger of the hike in general. Make no mistake, this trail is very technical, tough and can certainly be treacherous (particularly on the way down) but all in all, it's a beautiful hike. We hiked as far as Camp Trail since we... It is amazing that one can get up to 14,500 ft in reasonable temperatures. I am used to hauling up all the winter gear on climbs and it was a nice change not having to do that. As usual, we camped at Iceberg Lake. The climb itself is 8 pitches, then a bit more class III-IV scrambling to summit. Took... More

I did this trail with a group of about 8 people. We split it into 2 days and camped at base camp. The temperature when we started at the bottom was about 90 degrees and it was snowing at the summit. Bring layers and some waterproof clothing in case you run into snow or rain. Start early this is a... More

You have to get a permit to day hike it and you'd probably be better off spending the night up at trail camp and then knocking off the summit the next day. Take water and a filter, something warm, a hat and don't make this the first hike of the season. Walking around the block in preparation probably isn't going... More

I don;t think you can reach Mount Whitney by car within the park. We say it from US 395 after seeing Death Valley. There was a winding gravel road without guard rails that led up to the trails.

Lovely view. Enjoyed the easy walk to the Möbius arch. You can see Mt. Whitney in the distance. Stop at the visitors center for trail maps. The vistas on the Movie Rd brought back childhood memories of Gene Autry, Hop Along Cassidy, and all those Classic westerns. You'll need the map to find them. They aren't well marked.

I am 60 years old, and i have had altitude sickness in the past, so we took our ascent very slowly. I was hiking with my 3 sons and 1 son-in-law. We entered from the Horseshoe Meadow trailhead and hiked 40 miles over 5 days. The scenery was beautiful. There were lots of people on the trail, but not too... More

My boyfriend and I (both experienced backpackers and hikers) completed this as a day hike in 12 hours at the end of June. We started at midnight, and finished at noon the same day. If you feel comfortable hiking in the dark with a headlamp, I would HIGHLY recommend starting as early as possible. You’ll avoid the crowds, and ensure... More
