This is a wonderful falls to visit, generally always busy, but the falls are stunning and great photo - op area. Take a good walking stick if you're a little older like me to help with footing going down and take it slow with the elevation change coming back iup.

There were no parking spots available at the trailhead so I could not stop to see these falls. It is apparently a popular trail. Go early in the morning to get a spot.

Great hike. It is about 1.5 miles round trip. To get to the falls you go down hill and the falls do not disappoint. However, it is a bit steep getting back up.

These are the words spoken by the hiker returning up the trail to the folks at the trailhead asking about trail difficulty. Yes, the trail proceeds downward to the falls, and the trip back to the parking lot is uphill most of the way. Wear good shoes -- the trail has lots of rock.

We hiked on a weekday in early June. The park was not busy, but this trail was very populated -- probably one of the most used trails in the park. It was worth the 1.4-mile roundtrip hike. The falls are beautiful.

Only hike we did while driving along skyline, my kids enjoyed it though normally they don’t like to hike, we were lucky to have a sunny day above 70F, it’s not a long walk, do take water with you. The parking lot is rather small, big meadow is quite close so I guess we could park there and walk back if needed. The water fall is refreshing and lovely, at places we could cross the stream which was fun.

Choosing a favorite hike in Shenandoah is like trying to choose a favorite color of the rainbow. But Dark Hollow Falls was mine. It was quiet except for the stream that leads to a waterfall.

The short downhill trail to the waterfall is ~0.75 miles and the hike back up to the parking lot gains ~450 feet of elevation. The trail was quite congested and slippery at times, but the view of the waterfall at the bottom was worth it. You can’t miss Dark Hollow Falls when visiting Shenandoah!

Nice short hike just south of Meadows visitor center. A little steep going back up but very doable even for kids.

If you’re looking for a short option, park at the Dark Hollow Falls parking lot and hike straight down the path for less than a mile to reach the falls. From there, you can turn back around or continue hiking another 1.5 miles to Rose River Falls. My main tip for this hike is to prepare for a more difficult ending- you start the hike going downhill but end it going uphill.

I'm giving this a 5 because the hike is not overly-long or extremely strenuous. It was, for us, the signature hike we did while visiting Shenandoah NP.

The trailhead for this hike is on Skyline Drive itself. The lot appeared to fill up early. You can avoid this by parking at the Big Meadows Visitors' Center lot and doing an additional ~ 1/2-mlie or less hike from there to the trailhead on a separate trail. So if the lot is full, don't give up! You could also hike from lodging at Big Meadows, but it would be at least a mile from there to the VC, so it would become roughly a 3-mile (one-way) hike.

From the trailhead, you begin descending almost immediately. Most of the trail is a gentle downhill slope, with occasional steps or slightly steeper inclines. Once you reach the top of the falls, the remainder of the trails (basically a large switchback to get to the base) is steeper, but not too bad. The trail is rocky; if you have hiking poles, they will help.

We went in the latter half of October and the Fall foliage was a great bonus during the hike.

At the base of the falls, I think the total distance is just under 1.5 miles. We saw people of all ages and fitness levels doing this hike, so it should be within most peoples' ability-range. The return hike (uphill) is definitely more strenuous than the descent.

The earlier you go, the more of the crowd you'll likely avoid. Throughout our hike, the crowd on the trail steadily increased (we started around 9:30 a.m., I think).

If you are visiting Shenandoah, I would highly recommend this hike.
