We spent a few minutes looking at this well-known formation. True to its name it has an interesting cross-hatched surface from horizontal layering of the ancient sand dunes and vertical cracking from expansion and contraction. Worth a quick stop at the viewpoint.

Stopped to view this rock formation. One of many unusual ones in the area. Great for picture taking. My husband renamed it the Chess Board Mesa

Incredible to think it is a giant "petrified" sand dune. So hard to take in the eons which has past to create the current landscape and how different it was. Zion National Park is a must do, beautiful scenery, great walks even for those of...More

Don't try to get a pic on the fly. Pull into the pullout and get the full view of this amazing feature and area. Just so beautiful.

We didn't get to stop here (because we didn't want to wait any longer than we had to to enter the tunnel) but got some great shots from the car. It's beautiful!

This is a great vista showing a unique erosion pattern on a huge mesa at Zion National Park. Pull in a take a few pics. Lookout for the mountain goats and sheep nearby.

To see the same as a checkerboard carved on the side of this rock is amazing, makes you wonder how it happened. There is also a pullout on State Road 9 from the East gate to the park to see it better.

This is an incredible geological experience. Well worth the stop to view and photograph. We drove through the park several times and it looked different in different light.

The Checkerboard Mesa (really a huge mountain side) is one the many treasures to be discovered on the drive through Zion from the South Entrance to the East Entrance. Weather and water have created a unique design on a huge scale.

You can not miss it when you come from the eastern entrance, stop taking some pictures and then drive ahead because you'll see you very cool all along the way. The cliff is great looking and has an cool pattern.
